When you REALLY want to practice your kana!
In preparation for a trip to Japan in 2019, I have started studying Japanese. I was using plain college ruled notepaper to practice characters, but found that whenever I tried using an app to check my writing, my attempts were wrong because I placed the strokes incorrectly. That prompted me to buy these notebooks, which have squares instead of lines, so that I could “get serious” about my kana practice.PROS:The squares are larger than college rule notepaper lines, so I can really work on my character strokes and focus on the correct start and stop points. (See photo for comparison)The notebooks are arranged so that you can choose to use them the Western way, starting at what I consider the “front” of the book, writing left to right and top to bottom. If you prefer, you can use them as a Japanese person would, starting at the “back” of the book, and either writing right to left, top to bottom horizontally, or vertically. There are narrow columns between the squares that help keep vertically written characters separate. (Maybe a Japanese person knows of another purpose for these really skinny columns, but I don’t!)The pages are off white, which I didn’t think I’d care about, but turns out is nice under bright lighting.CONSNone really to mention, except maybe if you were hoping to pop these into a 3-ring bindeer, you can’t. They are smaller than 8.5”x11” notepaper and have no holes. (See photo)I’m happy with this purchase, and will buy again when I fill these notebooks up!As a bonus, there is a collection of stickers in the cover, with a mix of hiragana and kanji characters, that I can’t read yet but am inspired to learn! They probably say things like “Language Arts” or “To Do List”, but I’m going to learn them anyway!

Note— they are thinner than they look!
These books came in much quicker than I expected, which was nice. I was surprised at how thin they were, but they are just practice notebooks, so there’s no issue with them being thin— not to mention there are three notebooks provided, so there’s more than enough paper to practice on. They’re not the exact type of grid I was looking for, but they’re still a good and accessible alternative to DAISO grid notebook paper since that seems scarce recently. Comes with some stickers you can use for Japanese kana practice if you are learning the language like I am!

A bit small for Kanji(Chinese) and tips for fountain pen users
These books are fine if you want to practice writing hiragana. The boxes are too small if you want to practice kanji. The paper is doing great on holding fountain pen ink. However, it is kinda slippery for most of my pens(capless EF, imperial triumph M, M805 EF) and it's impossible to maintain control. The only pen I have that performs well is a cheap sheaffer 330. The picture is performed by pelikan M805. As you can see, I messed up with some. If you want a good calligraphy paper, I recommend Tomoe River.

Paper feels like plastic..
I would not have ordered if I knew the paper was not going to be normal paper. It feels super smooth kind of like plastic. It smears a lot and you can't use free ink pens or gel ink pens, only ballpoint which is disappointing. Otherwise it's perfect, so if that's not an issue for you then definitely get it!

Very high quality of paper
Paper quality is outstanding. It’s very smooth on the surface and easy to write. Also durable for using eraser, too. I went to buy same notebook at the local Japanese bookstore but they didn’t carry same quality of notebook.Highly recommend!

Recommend!
It’s a lot smaller than I thought it would be but value for money and the pages are thick and nice to write on. Oh and they added some lil stickers in it, it’s cute. Came on time no damages, smells and looks new.

Must Have for Japanese Practice
Exactly as described. Perfect for practicing any Japanese syllable. For that matter I'm sure the same could be said for Korean or Chinese. Good price as well. If you're practicing one of these languages and even considering buying this, do it. It is super helpful to be able to write out things by hand as many times as needed.
