Pepetools Designer 4" X 4"X 3/4" Jewelers Steel Bench Block

The new block is 4140 alloy steel hardened to about 55 rockwell C. Pepe tools says the oil quenched steel is through hardened. The hardness is just right for a bench block, but the ground finish on my block is quite rough on every surface and far from the mirror , ultra smooth finish Pepe Tools advertises. The steel is too hard to smooth with abrasive paper, but I have lapped it with diamond hones to get it to a smooth polish I can see my face in. This takes hours to do since the grinding marks are quite deep. I like the hard steel, but am not at all happy with the rough surface. I hope Pepe Tools will greatly improve the surface finish of their blocks in the future. It could be easily done by using a finer grit wheel on their surface grinder.
