Great Travel Guide for Costa Rica
You get what you pay for, especially with this one! You get National Geographics expertise and robust knowledge of local culture and activities. Plus, you get a map included with the book to be taken with you on your travels, and for planning in advance of the trip. The book is broken into sections and has tons of local information compiled into one book, much of which isn’t readily available on the internet because of the limited locations with websites.

We were on a specific tour program
If you are planning your own trip , this book might be of more benefit than it was for us because we were on a specific tour program that was planned for us. It had a lot of local home visits in it.

Very high level info, no pictures
We were visiting 4 regions in Costa Rica for the first time, and looking for a travel book that would help inform us and help navigate in the different areas. This book was very high level, and only covered what you could find during any internet search. Brief 2 pages each on the areas we visited — Monteverde, La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio, and Nosara. No travel tips like the other guides. No good info on plants or wildlife.

general touristy guidebook
It is a required textbook for an interdisciplinary trip I'm going to take, I expected more information but generally for someone who is not well informed about Costa Rica, it is a good book.

Excellent source
I expected National Geographic quality, and I got it. I will use it to learn more about different natural and cultural aspects of Costa Rica in planning a future trip.

Difficult to read
More like a National Geographic article than a travel guide. It has detailed description of innumerable parks but it is very difficult to rank the top ones to see. The section on accomadations are very sparse. The author does not give his opinion as to 'The Must See" attractions in the country
