Murdered (Click Your Poison)

Chillingly Fun!
I don't like reviewing other writer's work. Being a writer, I know what a gut-wrenching, mind-numbing process it is. It feels like giving birth to a twenty foot snake, one foot a week (I imagine). But, I just couldn't let this book go without my two cents. It deserves to be noticed. I won't comment on grammar, spelling, syntax, or that technical jazz. I want to describe this as a fan. I have never read the R.L.Stine children's books, and am told that this book, and the author's second book, "Infected", uses a similar, 'choose your own ending' story line. Owning over forty-thousand books, and reading most (some are reference books), I have a pretty good grasp of creative devices and techniques. This was new to me. All that aside, the book is well-written, the scenery vividly described, and the mystery intense and palpable. The claim is, you can read it fifty times and get a different ending. I'm on my second read, and I believe it. I am looking forward to number fifty..

Make sure to view ALL selections.
First time I went through this book I was able to catch the (false) culprit. But not being the ending with the full explanation, I had to of course go through it again. But each time I kept dying. And dying. And getting killed numerous times. I was in a rut. I was exasperated. No matter what I chose I kept getting killed. I was going through the same scenario over and over again that I knew what would happen to me if I chose one thing or the other. I thought I had a defected Kindle edition or something. Until I turned the page one more time out of exasperation. And there, I hit the gold mine. The missing selection that I needed to proceed with my quest for justice and truth. To be honest, I did feel a bit embarrassed that I kept missing this one selection that would've led me to the ending I was seeking (which is why I probably should've just bought the paperback version but live and learn). This book was a very fun adventure for me. Granted I did get killed A LOT, but it was most satisfying to be able to catch the real culprit and find out what was truly happening. I enjoyed that as the main character, the reader's gender was pretty neutral. I mean, there was a point where I was able to make love with the hot female detective (I'm female by the way and straight) or even the main suspect (who was male). It did not discriminate, and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. Those who like mystery and enjoyed the first Click Your Poison (Infected) book should definitely pick this one up as well. It is fun and educational.

Great premise for a book!
I loved the Choose Your Own Adventure series as a kid, but this didn't quite have the same effect or impact on me. The story was a little slow and although there was definitely some interesting parts to it, it didn't hold my interests as I hoped. I may try one of the others in the future.

Language Issues
I wish I could give the story 4 out of 5. It had a good plot and kept you interested. However, it had some unnecessary language in the book. Yet, that may depend on the choices that you make. Despite the language issues, it was a pretty good read and hard to put down.

Incredibly fun!
If you were a fan of the Choose Your Own Adventure series as a kid, then welcome to the adult version! This is a well written, well organized storyline that seamlessly flows, whatever your decision may be. The action is pretty much non stop from start to finish. I look forward to reading more of this authors books.

I felt like I was there!
Yet another fine novel by James Schannep, written in the tradition of Choose Your Own Adventure books. Having obtain the first one, Infected, for FREE I chose not to wait on this one and immediately purchased it! Whereas, Infected featured zombies in a new take on the apocalypse, Murdered puts you in league with investigators to a grisly murder. What really appealed to me is that this story took place in Rio de Janeiro during the time of Carnaval, which is similar to Mardi Gras. I love the foreign setting for this story and I felt like I was there in Rio along with Bertram and Danly, your American investigators. This story makes me want to both visit and avoid Rio during this time of the year. You have to read it to understand why.The pacing was well handled and the characters very realistic. I made it to the end, though did not achieve the ultimate ending. I will definitely go through this book again and try my hand at different decisions. If you like mysteries, in which you can become the detective, then this book is for you!!

Great Book!!
I loved how you got to pick what happens next. After you get to the end, then you can go back and choose another option with a different outcome. I will be getting the other books in this series.

Outstanding. Highly recommended.
As someone who grew up reading adventure gamebooks like the Fighting Fantasy and Lone Wolf series, as well as 'pick your path' style series like Choose Your Own Adventure, I am always on the lookout for new gamebooks. I was ecstatic to see so many new offerings recently, and the Click Your Poison series by James Schannep is so far the best of the bunch. The writing is intelligent and mature (it is not a book for kids), the choices you make have meaning and can lead to actual consequences (both good or bad), and you never feel as though you're being written down to (which is often a problem in modern gamebooks). Schannep knows what he's writing about and does it well, all while keeping you intrigued and interested. The book reads like an action/mystery/crime movie, the characters draw you in and make you care about them (and at times question them, like a good mystery/crime book should), and as there should be there is plenty of readability. You can finish the book and solve the crime, but there are other clues and routes to follow while you search for the one 'Best Ending.'I love seeing books like this continue to be written and published, and love it even more when the book turns out to be so well done and a true successor to the gamebooks we read as kids. Even moreso, the book works for anyone who hasn't read anything like this before, as it is so well-written and engaging that it easily feels like a regular novel.I will be buying the rest of the Click Your Poison series and hoping for a sequel to Murdered, and highly recommend you pick this one up too. 5 stars.

Choose your ending.
I remember many many years ago, when I was young, reading a book that had multiple endings and you had the option of choosing different paths for a totally different result. As I recall that book was a murder story as well although I can't recall the title of the book. Thus when I saw this book and read the synopsis and a couple of reviews I was intrigued and bought it on a whim.I wasn't disappointed at all. This is one of those books that utilises modern technology to provide a seamless reading experience. Simply clicking on one of the links at the end of each scene will take you somewhere else and if you're not careful you could wind up dead in a very short time. We start in Rio when our hero, that's you by the way, stumbles across a still warm body, a gun and the fleeting glimpse of someone who might be the murderer. As you make your selections you're introduced to investigators from the US embassy who're keen to catch the murderer. You are also a suspect in the murder too so be careful with those links. If you wind up dead or charged with murder you can always go back and start again. I managed to get all the way through and am going to start again one rainy and make different choices. The book is simply written with sparse descriptions but that doesn't take away from it at all because you're following links and hoping you make it through the scene in one piece, more or less.A wall deserved five stars.

A flop, don’t waste your time and money!
I love mysteries, thrillers, escape rooms etc... but this book was a flop. I didn’t like the style of writing which made it hard to read. The storyline was unrealistic and so making a “choice” to flip to your next page was mostly at random. I found myself disappointed in the book and could not wait to finish it. (Which took almost no time at all, a day or two tops).

Long winded between choices!!
Could have done with shorter descriptions between choices a bit long winded at times.
