This item (as i have received it) is dangerous and should be avoided.The handle does not fit the mattock head, either the handle or the mattock head hole is incorrectly shaped, and no amount of downward pressure / tapping down will allow the two to fit together securely. The attached photos show the gap that is left inside the mattock head when it has been driven nown as far as possible - the width (blade to blade) is as tight as it can possibly go, but the depth (side to side) has significant gaps. A couple of healthy blows to a root and the head becomes completely loose.The result is when you swing this above your head (as you will do when work on thick roots etc) you play a game of Russian Roulette with the 5lb mattock head - it may not fall this swing..or the next...but it will, and you do not want to be the one "pulling the trigger" when it does! 5lbs of super sharp (this is a positive feature I suppose) drop forged steel mattock head (with the added advantage of the momentum you are providing it) hurtling towards significantly less solid cranium is not a contest that will end well....I semi-joke, but this is genuinely dangerous!Now, either a number of reviews for the item are false, or there is a quality control issue where either the head or handle are not being manufactured consistently, and are not being quality checked before release. This is reflected in the review left by "Amazon Customer" on 19 June 2022, suggesting that this is not a "one off" problem.I started the returns process, but found that I have to pay the return postage, and I may not get a full refund as the item has been "used".I will wait to see whether the seller reads this review and chooses to respond, and I will dig (ironically) a little deeper to see if I can find contact details for the seller to contact them directly and raise both my concerns over the danger of the product and my displeasure at being expected to suffer financial loss when returning such a product. If any progress is made in this respect I will updat this review accordingly, but in the meantime I would strongly recommend you avoid this product.

I bought this to try to help break up heavily compacting soil after it had been driven over many times by builders equipment for an extension. It worked extremely well and easily got underneath the roots of the weeds in the compacted soil so that it was possible to remove the roots and just leave the soil. A good addition to my garden tools

Excellent quality

i had been trying to dig out the stump of an old conifer for about a week on and off, when i saw on youtubesomeone digging out a tree stump with a mattock. Ordered this from the Amazon seller. When it arrived, in two pieces but well packed, I found it easy to assemble, although its fairly heavy. Then the same afternoon i'd dug a trench round the stump with the mattock, stones and clay were no problem. Sawed through the remaining roots and lifted out the stump. This is a really robust digging tool, recommended.

Sister recommended a mattock to get old tree stumps and weeds out of the garden. We tried her wooden mattock and decided to buy this. Very impressed- son dug out 3 stumps in a day and the previously unused corner of the garden is no’s nearly ready for planting.Easy to use, good grip, nice and sturdy, highly recommended

Beware this is not 1 product, it's 2 separate items, a blade and a handle, which have been sold together in the hope they fit! The blade clearly doesn't fit with the handle and is very loose., which not only makes it unusable but also dangerous. In my opinion the seller should not be selling these items as it is unsafe.
