RIP Philip Carlo ... you are the Don of mob book authors ... you are missed!!!
This book is a compelling story about author Philip Carlo's struggle & eventual demise to ALS. Carlo is raw & open about all aspects of his life from his childhood leading up to his ALS diagnosis and into his battle against this brutal disease which in the end takes his life! I have read all of Carlo's mob books which are all 2 thumbs up if you ever want to read True Crime books that will make you question humanity. His writing style is direct and biting ... your sadness and compassion for Carlo will convert into pride and satisfaction as Carlo lives his life to the fullest all the way until his end.

Best Book Ever
I promise you this book will change your life forever and the way you view Lou Gehrig's disease. You will become a more critical person of politics, researchers, religion and if you ever get this disease that a peaceful choice to die may be the best option. Carlo inspired me to write for a living with his other great reads and this book was the icing on the cake. His style is unique. He delivers a great story in a simple way but his use of words and commas likens that of Hemingway or Fitzgerald. He never tries to impress the reader with great writing but he impresses you with a great story!

If you like Carlo then this is a good read.
As I have said before, I love Philip Carlo so I have read all his books, this is more personal about his life and his writings. He is an amazing writer, yet this book gets a little dull. But I loved hearing stories of him dealing with famous killers, and Mob men.

He dedicated his life to the dark side
He knew he was dying yet it did not stop him from getting out the story of what made him survive as long as he did. A true " sophisticated" tough guy. I wish I knew him.

Heartbreakingly good
I love Carlo's writing and this book is another riveting read. Unfortunately, it's about his personal battle with ALS, but true to his nature, I can't put it down. His sense of humor is enduring and his ability to take you on his journey is profound.

Potential Lost in Overly Repetitive Stories and Bragging
"The Killer Within" is supposed to be about the Carlo's ALS, and at times it is. The best parts of it were things such as when Carlo was talking about how going to the store is a big win for him, or how he has to breathe with a tube, and other people have to feed him. However, this seems like a small fraction of the book. Instead it is really bogged down with a lot of repetitive and pointless information. The author, while somewhat sympathetic as he has had some hard things happen to him in his life, comes across as an utter snob and there is tons of sophistication porn in the book -- he refuses to eat at restaurants with tourists, you hear about his every foodie meal (did you know that seared octopus and chocolate is "amazing?"), he humble brags about knowing Robert De Niro and other celebrities, how the people around him have read most of his books, and how the books have been translated into so many different langues but no, he would never think of himself as a celebrity! He also likes talking about how great he is at everything he does, and hot his wife is, a woman 25/26 years younger than himself, and how people take her to be his daughter. Apparently he lived in model-ville, because everyone he meets, as well as everyone eating around him, is always "amazingly attractive" or the like. He also talks about how, while most people with disabilities don't want to have sex, he does. "The Killer" also seems to rehash of a lot of his other works, giving out information which Carlo readers will probably already know."The Killer Within" had a lot of potential, and at times that potential shines through. Unfortunately, the good parts are hidden in a lot of overly repetitive stories and not so humble bragging.

Carlo transcends himself
This is a book about growing up with the mafia quite literally next door, about a descendant of emigrants going back to his Italian roots, about becoming a writer, about the authors' life and problems while the book is written, and about a fight to live a life in spite of a debilitating illness. Lou Gehrig's Disease or ALS. The pieces are woven together in what somehow feels like a natural order, and with some humor and a few surprises thrown in.The book is written with a clearer and more personal voice than Carlos' other books. However, if you want to read a detailed account of some criminals' activities, pick another one of his books.

ALS
This a a very good book, I had trouble putting g it down. Philip was already dead by the time I managed to read it. It's very informative of the dreadful disease and hopefully, they will find a cure to what must be one of the worst diseases we could contract. R.I.P. Philip Carlo, you have left a great legacy to mankind.
