Very good quality unit
StarTech products are certified to deliver what is advertised. New laptops do not have an ethernet port (RJ-45) and rely on Wi-Fi to connect to the internet. This device provides the hard wire ethernet option to connect to the internet or connect directly to your internet gateway (router/modem) to perform admin functions. In addition, ethernet connections are more secure than Wi-Fi connections. Further, ethernet connections provide faster upload, download speeds than Wi-Fi connections with reduced latency speeds. This unit is quality built and is highly recommended.

If you have an ultrabook without ethernet, you need this!
Despite the fact that my laptop, a Fujitsu Lifebook U904 has a ethernet port built in, a feat for a ultrabook, I didn't want to risk breaking it. It's one of those slide out and pop open gizmos that seems like it would break, then cost a fortune to fix. I'd much rather carry around a dongle than risk breaking anything. Initially, when I began researching USB to ethernet adapters, I found many of them suffered from poor performance, either slow transfer rates, despite "gigabit" connectivity, overheating, and an overall sense of unreliability. From that, I knew I wanted a few things: 1. a USB 3.0 adapter, to achieve gigabit 2. an adapter sold or supported by (or warrantied by, really) a reputable company 3. something with it's own processor, so it's not sapping off mine. I'm unsure if you've ever heard of StarTech... basically they sell cables for specialized uses. Maybe you need a HDMI to USB cable, for example, they'd likely have it. They're very good at what they do, and I knew this would be a good product just by the brand name. I've used it now for a few months, on a regular basis, and have had zero issue. It's actually saved me a few times, when I needed to do some advanced troubleshooting, packet sniffing, or bridging connections. It gets warm, but not hot. Transfer speeds are consistent, even over USB 2 (where you'll only get 100 meg, or I do, anyway). The only fault I find in it is the StarTech website. It's somewhat difficult finding the proper drivers for this model. There are a few variations of it. So be sure to look at the packaging or the little sticker on the back when you go to update drivers. You may end up with the wrong ones.

It easy to use.
All I had to do was plug it in and it works. No problems and no installing drivers. I use it on Linux Mint computers and Android tablets. I don't use Microsoft Windows so I can't tell you anything about that. Its easy and works great.

works with Mb air 2013, frees up thunderbolt port
This works with a macbook air purchased in 2013 (just before the new ones with the intel 5000 GPU's came out). My original review stated "I do not think it is very fast. Definitely slower than using the ethernet through the thunderbolt" The previous statement was erroneous, sorry! This dongle is just as fast as the thunderbolt ethernet, whether in MAC world, or in Windows (via Parallels). In my testing, it gets 4-5 GB a minute transfer speed (read from network, write to MB). We bought this for presentation situations (when the thunderbolt was needed to drive a projector, and where the wireless speed wld likely be poor due to heavy use or bad provisioning). It does just what we need

Do You Have An Older 10/100 NIC Card?? Buy This Now!!!
I have the latest & greatest Comcast White Cube Router, and could NOT for the life of me figure out why my speeds were so slow compared to what they kept telling me by email I should be getting. I tried everything I could, replaced cables, upgraded the splitters....everything. No dice. I even called Comcast, & they ran a battery of tests, & said I was getting a very high speed to the home, but I couldn't see it. So they sent a tech out, and he was great, very diligent. For two hours, he ran a ton of tests, checked the line from the street right to the router, and I still wasn't seeing high speeds I should have been seeing. He couldn't understand it either. After he left, I did hours of more online searching, and came to find out that my laptop was one of the last models to use a 10/100 NIC card, as the super internet fast speeds were just now starting to come about. I'm not a HARD computer user, so the older card wasn't a huge deal. It seemed fast enough for me. But when I found out I should be getting up to 5X the speed I was, if not more, I wanted it. Anyways, I found this StarTech.Com 3.0 USB Gigabit adapter listed on Amazon, and seemed to be THE answer I was looking for, so I got it. 48 hours later, you can see the difference in speeds. It does EXACTLY what is says it will, and I'm thrilled with it. Without a doubt, it's THE best $25 I've ever spent on ANY kind of computer equipment EVER. Big Fan!!

Works well on Mac Lion mid 2012 MacbookAir
Bought a 2012 MacbookAir this year. I do have the thunderbolt gigE adapter but I am using the port for the miniport display for the 24" cinema display (Yeah I am one of those mac heads, wanna fight about it? Just joking). Seriously though the adapter I needed since I can't use the thunderbolt port, and there are no thunderbolt hubs out yet. The Air is wireless as everyone knows, which is a pain. Been waiting for this adapter for quite awhile I even wrote to the guys at ASIX asking for one they told me to wait. The short of it this works well with mac but you need the driver for it. The driver included on the CD in the package is old so you might as well check for the latest from ASIX at [...] Mac is sometimes painful so I'm happy this is working well. One thing to note however. I ran a few iperf tests. Incoming connections are getting about 110MB <- megabytes/s where outbound is getting on average of 95MB. The other computers I am testing to are mac and linux both are slower machines. Is it possible the RAM buffer is just that much faster on the Air? Running the adapter on 10.7.4 haven't tried 10.8. ------> Update 8-3-14 <------ Still running great here. I have updated the driver at least once during my operation and it's been running flawlessly. I am still running this on a 2012 MacAir. I have recently purchased a second unit for LACP. I will update this review after I get it installed/setup and tested. ------> Update 8-8-14 <------ This works great with the MacAir and LACP. I have it hooked into a Netgear switch that supports LACP and into a Synology diskstation. Getting great results, pretty close to reading from a local SATA drive. I love this stuff. Can't wait for when 10 Gig comes down in price.
