Interesting take....
I was both excited and a bit cautious about this new text on the Necronomicon. I was intrigued by Mr. Tyson's novel, and subsequent version of the Necronomicon. There are so many out there that any new ones that happen upon the market are always taken with a grain of salt. And Mr. Tyson's is no exception. Now, this new text has me very interested in his attempt to facilitate a new fully workable system based upon Lovecraft's Mythos. Having been a practicing magician for over 30 years, I decided to purchase and read through his tome. I must say that at first glance, it is something that smacks of both horror pulp and legitimate document. I know that Mr. Tyson was attempting to create a system for anyone to "touch" these powers, and I think he may have hit up on something here. I have a bit of trouble with his sigils, as they do not speak to me, but that is one magicians tastes to anothers. I would work through the sigilization on my own to create something that evokes the qualities of the spirit in question. But that aside, I think that his designation of "lords" to the seven spheres is much akin to my own practice over the years and therefore gives me something to latch onto. I would think that anyone that has, or is currently working, with planetary magic will find something to experiment with, if not actually add to their practice. I haven't made it completely through this book, but so far I am seeing a workable attempt to reach and touch the powers of Lovecrafts Mythos. Many have attempted, but many have failed, or created something so outlandish and undoable to be relegated to the realm of fantasy. I know the irony of that statement, but this could possibly turn into a workable system of magical practice. I will revise this review after a complete study. Who knows, maybe this will be the tome that all Lovecraftians have been searching for. Time will tell.

Very good book for further development.
Most don’t realize this book although claims to be about spiritual realization is vary vague about what that really means. Keeping in the vein of Crowley we all have different ideas as to what that is. He refers to the idea that these beings have a plan and really have no concern whether humans align with the plan or not since their view is macro cosmic and humans think in microcosmic terms. He however tries to align these beings to planetary powers to better work with them, that is to have some sort of correspondence frame of reference. This correspondences coupled with the simon Necronomicon once should inform the savvy magician and provide more than enough information for a workable system of empowerment through the Old Ones. It might seem watered down and in many cases is but is only one portion of the mythic Necronomicon but curiously aligns with the rest of the corpus in a eerie way leading the astral worker to wonder about the astral Necronomicon and how is making is way into reality.

Great addition to your library!
This Grimoire of the Necronomicon is the best Lovecraftian Spirituality text on Amazon. I've read the Astronomicon by Kurt Khave and When The Stars are Right by Scott R Jones. Donald Tyson is the only one out of these 3 that isn't arrogant, and a self proclaimed prophet. Donald lays out a pratical system with sigils, rituals, mythology, and practices. Grimoire of the Necronomicon is a great addition to any believer of the Old Ones!

When the original Necronomicon was published the concern was that the possibilities talked about were so old they could not be controlled. What Tyson did here was put the work in a normal framework like any other planetary magick that could be controlled by normal means. With regards to the Necronomicon Grimoire, basically what has happened is that the insane chief God has become sane. He has become Helios who now sits on the center throne with Earth and Sky, Mars and Venus sitting to his left and right. Their sanity and balance now flows down to his 11 Lieutenant gods who also now are sane and play the chief Gods sane tune on their flutes. All is sane now. That which has been unbalanced and devolution has returned to balance and evolution.

Grimoire of the Necronomicon by Donald Tyson
This book's title is misleading. Its not a real grimoire, as it doesnt teach spells or rituals to do.. It mainly espouses Necronomicon as a religion & establishing a cult of the Old Ones. It does have a lot of cool sigils & i'm sure it could be used for Magick, it's just not exactly what the title says. Can be purchased for little, however; as it is mass-produced, has little resale value. i have ever installment of Tyson's Necronomicon series except his Tarot which i can't wait to get! (The other titles being: The Wanderings of Alhazred, The 13 Gates Of, & The Dream World Of Lovecraft.) Tyson is a solid occultist. i would also recommend his work entitled, 'TETRAGRAMMATON'.

I have to Finish "Alhazred" before I read this!
I am sure that I will love it if the book about the author of the Necronomicon is any indication... It is called Alhazred and it is the journey about Abdul Alhazred, the author of the Necronomicon. The book is part of three that are written by the same author, so far, I can't put it down.

Eh....
You either love this book, or you don't. The description on the Old Ones is very useful especially for a Lovecraft fan but other than that it doesn't seem very practical. The one part I like is the part about the Elder Seal, that will be probably the one part I will experiment with. If you want to learn a new form of magick then this is your book. If you want to find a book about how to come into contact with interdimensional beings then you should find your own way.

Excellent system in my opinion. Lets clear up some misunderstandings
This seems to get a lot of bad reviews in other parts, so lets clear some things up for prospective buyers:(its obvious what my opinion is of this grimoire so i will instead give my review over to clearing certain misunderstandings that mar what i think is a very good magickal system)Tyson, early on, admits that this is a form of "Chaos Magick". For those that dont know what that is i will try and sum it up (but you would be best to read up on the practice). Chaos Magick is a form of magickal practice that rather than being told what deities to use or ideas, you are encouraged to use whatever works for you personaly. Whether that be the norse gods or something fictional like the deities from the Elder Scrolls games. And you are encouraged to feel free to mix and match. It is the pick 'n mix of magickal practices. Its eclecticism taken that few steps further. I have not done chaos magick must justice but that is the lite descriptionSo What tyson is doing is presenting you with fleshed out Lovecraftian beings and correspondences. Including a fully formed "path" to follow if you so wish.It has been claimed that Tyson attempts to make this pracitce all fluffy and friendly (for lack of a better phrase). Did these people even read the book?! Not a page or two goes by where Tyson does not hammer into the readers, and potential practicioners, head that these beings are not human friendly. The only reason they would help a few of us is because we offer our services as mortal agents on a world where they cannot directly step foot. Its made clear you are either for or against them. There is no middle ground. Indeed, some of the "Old Ones" are not predisposed to even their human agents. And treat them with only a little more regard than they show those that do not serve them. Why else would the book give you a ward that can be used against threat to mind and body? This is about dealing with beings that are dangerous. And never is the opposite opinion stated.Part of the goal of the Old Ones is to clear the earth of humanity and other lesser beings. Part of the practice presented in this book regards a form of Gnosticism where through practice of certain disciplines, from martial to mental, you reach a state of gnosis meaning that you are fit to be regarded as having worth during the time in which the Old Ones do purge the earth. Some have assumed that Tyson means that the Old Ones do not intend to destroy mankind. Quite the opposite. Its just that for now up until the final days, they are willing to take human servants that will become worthy of gnosis. Which in this case means gaining some of the alien abilities of the various races. And even if you pass before the time comes you will not pass into oblivion but will be saved from that and given an alien body when the time comesThis is where some of the reviews have it right, there are elements that coincide with certain beliefs of "major" religions such as Christianity. This is one of those things that you will see in many magickal practices, no matter how old and pure they claim to be. There will often be a kernel of the regional major religion. Even if it is only small. It is a fact that Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and certain other religions have had an influence on all of culture. Even cultures long past but now ressurected."The Necronomicon was only a fictional book. Its not real" etc... Yes we know. See my point about chaos magick. According to most magickal theory something can be created astrally in the mind of the user. Even something as powerful as a deity. The more people who use that deity in their practice the more powerful it becomes. This particular practice deals very heavily with astral travel. Through, thematically, gates. Are the Old Ones evil? Yes, you could call them that. Why have them as patrons? They are powerful. They permeate much of culture, their astral footprint (so to speak) is large. We ally ourselves for the same reason some other magickal practitioners ally with, arguably, evil deities or beings. All this book proposes is a system of magick and a framework for a magickal order (if the readers wish to form one).If you read nothing else in my review then PLEASE READ THIS. Its not so much a TL;DR as a quick opinionI will be honest, had i seen the reviews before i bought this book, i would not have bought it. I am glad that i was able to form my own opinion. And i urge others to do the same. You must understand that this book is one that competes with many other systems based on the "Cthulhu Mythos". So it will always have those who dont find it right for them. And some, rather than giving a fair review say its terrible without even stating good reasons why.I realise i am doing something similar. But i am not saying to you its the best no matter what blah, blah, blah. I am saying here are the facts give it a go based on your own opinion. Frankly i dont really mind if you dont like it. Thats not the point. The point is that you will have read it and you will know if YOU like it. Not if some stranger does.

Wonderful fiction. I enjoyed the book thoroughly. Didn't go insane and gibber upon reading it, but that's because the Necronomicon is Fictional, and you really need to invest time and energy if you want to go mad from reading it. And that's precisely why this grimoire was so fun to read: its a manual on how to invest said energy and time towards going mad, gibbering at the stars and finally being consumed utterly by eldrich horror!after a few days of practice, you'll be dreaming of sunken cities and women gibbering inchoately at invisible entities who may be void of substance entirely, due to being fictional! After a few weeks, mythological trends through history will realign themselves in your mind to seem as though penned by a half mad xenophobe from 1920s Providence. That shouldn't stop the discerning wizard from the gnosis that comes from awakening to the FACT that ALL MYTHS AND RELIGIONS ARE FICTIONAL, and so working with Lovecraftian tropes will work just as well as summoning 'real' entities into your magic circle. Mirror neurons do all the work, so imagination is better than knowledge.the only negative thing i have to say about it (aside from not going insane reading it) is that the seals of the elder gods are ugly. it took me a few minutes to scry my own that are much more esthetically pleasing than the ones in the book. but that said, Tyson is inventing a system from his imagination for working with imaginary entities. perhaps the reader's imagination can embellish it in their own personal way and make their own Necronomicon. four stars!!
