ACTIVE miniDP to HDMI a must for certain multi monitor setups
I purchased several ACTIVE miniDP to HDMI adaptors when the first one I ordered did not work on my Mac. My setup - 2013 Mac Pro, Yosemite OSX, 1 UHD monitor, 1 Thunderbolt Display, 1 HDMI display. When using multiple monitors (more then 2 it seems) a 'normal miniDP to HDMI adaptor or direct HDMI connection would not work as one or several of the monitors pictures would cycle on and off or 'flash'. So an ACTIVE mimiDP to HDMI adaptor is needed to 'offload' the conversion step from the GPU to the adaptor to stop picture flashing. The Mac Pro only puts DD (Dolby digital) or multichannel surround sound out through DP or HDMI so the adaptor needs to pass at least 5.1 surround (I believe this unit will pass 7.1) to get surround sound from this Mac. While the previous active adaptor I purchased advertised DD passthrough, that was not the case. I don't quite know why but it seems to do with Apples implementation of surround and how it's formatted?? Anyway, the Uptad unit passes the surround audio perfectly to my amplifier and also allows me to use my third monitor which is connected through the amplifier allowing a 3rd desktop. No configuration is needed and it worked right out of the box. I do get several seconds of screen blink when I turn on the third monitor or the amplifier when the computer is already running but I can't see how it's this unit but rather the computer GPU adjusting for the new condition.

60hz 4K MacPro
Works great. I have a MacPro Quad core Xeon and a Samsung hdmi 2.0 4K tv. I am finally running my 4K tv at 60hz. I have been waiting for an adapter like this for awhile, and have purchased a few.Tv SetupThe tv has to have the "HDMI UHD Color" enabled for the HDMI port. On my tv this was in the picture options screen at the bottom.MacPro setupI turned off my Mac, plugged in the cable, and turned it back on. Apple doesn't support this automatically. I am using a program called switchResX which allows full control over resolution and refresh rate. I selected "3840x2160, 60Hz (NTSC)" and that's it. This is a paid program but pretty cheap.Over the last couple years I have searched the forums, company websites, Amazon and others for an adapter that would allow this to work, and they finally released one. 60hz, hell yah!!

To be able to enjoy 4K at 60Hz on OSX you need to install ...
I was able to achieve 4K resolution at 60 Hz on a late 2013 MacBook Pro with a Sony 4K TV. However, the company needed to send me the tips below before it would work and it was somewhat involved.Tips: Many TV manufacturers (Sony, Visio, LG, Samsun) are labeling their HDMI ports as 4k at 60Hz which are NOT HDMI 2.0 capable. Make sure the HDMI port you are using on the TV is HDMI 2.0 capable and not just 4K at 60HZ capable. HDMI port 4K at 60Hz indicates it is HDMI 1.4 capable of running 4K at 60Hz with color sampling of 4:2:0. Our adapters are full specification HDMI 2.0 and support color sampling 4:4:4 at 4K at 60Hz.* Apple MacBook Pro and Mac Pro – For now Apple El Capitan doesn't support 4K at 60Hz out of the box. To be able to enjoy 4K at 60Hz on OSX you need to install SwitchResX to force the 60Hz by creating custom resolution. You can download SwitchResX form madrau.comFirst I downloaded (and purchased) SwitchResX, but you can download a trial that works for 10 days.1. In El Capitan there is a new security feature called SIP "System Integrity Protection". Unfortunately this prevents SwitchResX from modifying the system files that contain resolution information. But you can temporarily disable "System Integrity Protection" to make changes. Once the resolution has been created and activated, you can turn SIP on again.2. Disabling SIP requires booting into the recovery partition. You boot in recovery mode by pressing CMD + R when starting up your Mac.3. Then open a Terminal window. Utilities->Terminal and type the command below: csrutil disable4. To re-enable SIP once the changes have been made; boot back into the recovery partition and set state toenabled: csrutil enable5. Now boot to El Capitan and open SwitchResX. Select the TV from the pane on the left. Then select "CustomResolution". I entered 3840 x 2160 and made sure that the Scan Rate for Vertical was set to 60 hz. Scaling isalso possible.6. Save the changes (by hitting apply, and rebooting your mac.. it will ask you to save). After the reboot you willsee the custom resolution added within SwitchResX under "Current Resolutions" for your TV.

Doesn't work in 4K mode with my equipment
This didn't work for me.I have a Clevo P370SM (System76 bonx7) laptop with a mini DP output that I want to connect to a Seiki SE42UMS 42-Inch 4K Ultra HD LED TV (2015 Model) (which has HDMI 2.0 inputs and can display 3840x2160@60 Hz.) using this cable: High Speed HDMI Cable 3Ft by EXHEED® - Latest Ultra HD 4k 2160p Pro Series Premium Elite Braided Gold Plated for PS4, Xbox One, Mac, HDTV, LCD + Free 90 Degree and 270 Degree Right Angle HDMI Adapter.I cannot get this adapter to display 4K video at either 30 or 60 Hz. The monitor says that no input signal is detected when the laptop is running at 4K resolution. The computer sees the monitor and the correct make and model number are shown. The adapter just doesn't seem to be emitting video when in 4K mode. However, a picture appears when I reduce the resolution to 1920x1080.I'm going to return this adapter because either it's defective, or it's just somehow incompatible with my configuration.
