Dad's happy
I bought this as a Christmas present for my Dad, as he's a fan of this author, and he's very pleased with it.Personally, though, I'm not a fan of the quality of books printed by Amazon, the covers tend to easily curl out of shape and don't feel that nice to touch.

Easy read to pass the time
Mostly read it as I'm from the area. Nothing exciting but an easy read that doesn't require much attention and a great memory.

You can’t go wrong with these books.
Although a little long winded at times I did enjoy the tale and the banter between the characters flows naturally. The unlikely and somewhat strange happenstance that sets this band of merry and not so merry acquaintances rushing allover the East End and into the more up and coming parts of our capital chasing the evidence no matter where it leads in a case that has scared everyone.

Good read.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Original story!ine, surrounded by historical facts. It brings to life the hardships and challenges of life in East end London in the nineteenth century. The characters were well written and cannot wait to see how they develop in the next book, especially the relationship between Adelaide and Matthew. Look forward to reading book two.

A cosy read
Great theme, interesting historical detail, sympathetic characters, written with a long touch. Easy to read, not particularly original but definitely enjoyable.

Disappointing and lightweight.
It was with much anticipation that I awaited the publication of this book. Heightened by glowing comparisons to lots of other renowned historical author's such as Anne Perry. My expectations were sadly not met. The plot was pedestrian and predictable. Coincidences are heavily relied on. The characters are all rather boring with the exception of Adelaide. The author seemed to have a check list of historical events and references that were shoe horned into the story and the result was all a tad flat and borderline boring. Not an awful book it just didn't live up to the hype for me. Maybe the 2nd will be better.

A good introduction
It kept me engaged throughout. Well written strong main characters with ironic humour. I'm sure I will enjoy the rest of the promised novels and already have the second in waiting for my attention! Can't wait to begin.
