StuccoWrap to Replace Grade D Building Paper?
This material is very similar to Tyvek. Code in our area of the country calls for two layers of moisture barrier under the stucco. The jury is still out on Styrofoam as a moisture barrier. Although it is impossible for me to tell, supossedly this Stuccowrap will drain water down to the foundation screed better. I used Stuccowrap instead of grade D building paper, in conjunction with Tyvek and Roadenhouse washers over R-Tech and it worked well. I won't know for sure unless I am forced to remove the stucco in the distant future and inspect the sheathing and or studs. But this paper is every bit as tough as Tyvek and will not tear as easily as grade D building paper. I only wish that the paper came with markings every 16 inches because nail or screw placement over styrofoam is hit and miss. Instead the logo is proudly printed advertizing the product and of course it says this side up so that the advertizing is not upside down. The question any builder will have is whether or not the extra expense is worth it being that probably all construction is currently being passed with the cheaper materials. For me the permeability made all the difference. Walls need to be able to breath and I think this product allows for that better than the old fashioned stuff. I wish it was cheaper. The clincher in my case was that the inner walls were going to be plastered not drywalled. CO2 needs to penetrate to become absorded by fresco plaster. With all the caulk and spray foam insulation used these days a house is pretty much hermetically sealed.
