This was a replacement for the original tachometer on our 1987 Newport 27 sailboat that has a Universal M18 inboard diesel engine with an alternator. Very similar to the original. Had to calculate the crankshaft to alternator pulley size ratio (simple math) and determine the number of poles in the alternator (12 in my case) in order to select the correct setting on the back of the new tachometer. Don’t be concerned if the dial indicator on the front of the tach seems stuck on something other than zero out of the box. It zeros when power is applied after installation. Instructions are good.

Not Plug and Play with Yanmar 2GM20
I bought this and returned it for a couple reasons. When it arrived in a shipping bag (not a box with protective foam) it was bouncing around in the bag and had come out of the original fold-and-snap shut style packaging. It looked like a nice tach though however my Yanmar 2GM20 has a plug and the leads are not exposed on the back. You likely can get this to work if you troubleshoot the wiring and use butt connectors but I decided to get the OEM tach even though it was $220 more. It cost me ~$320 for a brand new complete engine panel that has the OEM Yanmar tach.

works just like original
This tach is attractive, fits easily and is a spitting image for the original unit I am replacing, other than the handsome black finish that looks great with the other gauges on my Catalina 30 Mk II sailboat. Time will tell how reliable it is but the first month is good. I would take a chance on this unit.

This is a diesel alternator tach and works very well if your alternator has connection
Quality of tach and picks up signal from the alternator on some diesel tractors.5075E 5303 5000 series john deer. If your tractor has an open connection that reads about 7 volts it should work.

Larger than 3"
Tach is advertised as 3" but in fact the opening needs to be at least 3-3/8" diameter. Bezel OD is 3-3/4". Tach is too big for my panel so I will have to return it. Quality looks ok, too bad I wasn't able to try it.

Great tach, accurate and smooth movement.
Great tach, easy to install and accurate. Installed on a 1st gen dodge diesel, had to remove the rear alternator case to tap off of the stator windings for a signal wire.
