What size is 5x in waist size????

Gilbert sizing is as follows: small - 32, Medium 34, Large 36, XL 38, 2XL 40, 3XL 42, 4XL 44, 5XL 46

Are these for men or women? I'm a 5'3" female with a 25 inch waist. Someone recommended a medium for a 34 inch waist, would the small be to big on me?

These are Unisex. Sizes run as follows: Small - 32" - 34", Medium is 34" - 36" so XSmall is 30" - 32" and XXS is 28" - 30" They do tend to run small so you might want XXS and then when you try them on, if they are too big, wash in hot water and dry on High Heat to shrink and set them

medium is size 34 but they tend to run small, so my suggestion is to purchase a Large and wash in hot water and dry on high heat if you want them to shrink, otherwise go with the small and wash in cold water and air dry rather than use the dryer
