Enjoyable Mix of Aviation History and Fiction
I don't usually read historical fiction, but something about this book grabbed me and I downloaded it on a whim. I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed the story. I honestly didn't realize when I downloaded the book that it was nearly 600 pages long. The story just drew me in. It wasn't until I was about 60% through the book, that I actually looked it up to check the length because I thought there was something wrong with my Kindle. The story moved along well, and held my interest. I'm no expert, but I am a fan of military aircraft and Mr. Arnold's knowledge of the aerospace industry, war birds, flight characteristics, etc., appears to be solid and most impressive. There were just enough technical details to support the story without over-dosing the reader on dry aeronautical terminology. There were a few issues with editing (which I have come to expect with Kindle e-books), but most of them were relatively minor and didn't necessarily detract from enjoying the story. However, there were at least three instances where the "Norden Bombsight" was incorrectly referred to as the "Norton Bombsight". Given the crucial role that the Norden Bombsight played in the course of WWII, I did find this error a little annoying. Regardless, I enjoyed the story and getting to know the many facets of Jake Martin, tagging along like younger sibling as he tackled love, loss, tough decisions, and one harrowing adventure after another. It was a very enjoyable read.
