The holes are 1 inch squares. This is a cargo net.

Looking for something to hold in groceries when the hatch of a minivan is lifted after returning from the store. Will this work?

I do not know, depends on the anchor points. I am concerned that exhaust fume will enter the vehicle if the hatch is open. I suggest that you find another way to get the items from the store to home.

Must it be screwed fast?

You can use the screw fasteners but it also has the hooks to fasten like in the bed of a truck or the back of a suv.
