An interesting addition to the cocktail literature
I have tons of books on mixology, from the simple to the ridiculously complex. I would classify this tome and simplified complex. There are some interesting (read: out there) concepts that I have never seen, such as designing new drinks based on a compass strategy (apparently well thought-out and should be quiet useful) and the analog synthesizer concept (ADSR, for you fellow synth nerds) which seemed a bit dubious. Regardless, there are lots of novel drinks here, "most" of them within the reach of a hard-core home enthusiast. Although the authors touts that this book will keep you from having to buy many exotic liquors/liqueurs, there are still specs that call for booze that's hard to find and liqueurs that border on the bizarre (e.g., pine tar liqueur). These last points are picky and don't at all detract from the value of the book. I'm very glad to have it in my library and if you're into home bartending, this should be in yours as well.

You have stumbled upon a the hidden gen you were looking for
This book sets the bar for all other cocktail books. After reading this book you will be thoroughly disappointed with what the other books have to offer. The problem with most books is that they have alot of filler and regurgitate alot of info that is widely available. Not this book though.1. You get a quick overview of a lot of popular spirits. I didn't appreciate it at first but have ended up it using it quite alot to make new purchases.2. This book presents a pseudo algorithm for creating your own cocktails. If you ever wondered how to create completely novel cocktails this will show you how.3. Speaking of creating new cocktails, this book provides you with an arsenal of pseudo liqueurs that you can prepare yourself. Not only will you be able to create novel flavours to use, but this will explode the number of bottles your bar has for almost no money.4. Lastly the book provides you with a huge list of novel complex cocktails. These cocktails are crafted to the perfection. You will have a hard time going back to making 3-4 off the shelf ingredient cocktails that are so common.Just buy the book, the recipes for the 40 custom liquers, alone, make the book incredibly worth it.

Do you want to take your home bartending skills to the next level?
If you are happy with rum and coke this isn't the book for you, but, if you are already a skilled home bartender and want to take your skills to the next level, you should definitely buy this book. The book begins with a great glossary and description of the myriad of spiris and syrups that are available on the market today then proceeds to the explanation of how a great cocktail is made and how you can experiment to concoct your own cocktail according to you personal tastes. There are so many interesting cocktail recipes as well as a section for making your own extracts, cordials an liqueurs to add to your cocktails .You'll be serving your guests fabulous libations that no neighborhood bar could possibly offer. It definitely is not a book for beginners hence the title "Advanced Mixology"...however, if you are skilled but bored with the hum-drum, this book will be a purchase that you will not regret making.

A Hidden Gem
This book is chock-full of extremely in-depth (yet pleasant to read) explanations of ingredients, methods, mixes and cocktail origins; and contains recipes for what must be over a hundred master-crafted cocktails.Anyone with an interest in the nitty-gritty of cocktail making will thoroughly enjoy this book. Not only for all of the recipes, but also for the elegant methodology included for designing new cocktails from scratch.P.S.: I also highly recommend the author's previous cocktail book: 'Cocktails of the South Pacific and Beyond'. All of his books have been genuinely transformative to my skillset.

Great book!
I am enjoying this book! Less than 20 bucks, hard to go wrong there. The ingredient description section is very useful to me. Tells about flavors, other ingredients it mixes well with, history, uses, and often an amusing anecdote. The cocktail compass diagram is very useful to those who want to create their own cocktails. Lots of recipes for unique cocktails as well as recipes for syrups, cordials, and complexing agents to make your drinks stand out.
