MR77 Review
Review of the MR77: I use this instrument professionally and debated on it and a few other moisture meters. Our office utilized Delmhorst and Protimeter moisture meters, so was able to compare this model with those. I have been using this instrument for moisture mapping for about a month at the time of this review. Pros: 1. Very good build quality. The instrument feels very solid in the hand and feels high quality. 2. Measurements (relative humidity, temperature, scanning moisture, direct reading moisture) all appear very accurate in multiple situations. No lab quality testing but am able to compare to other instruments. 3. Can confirm device functions with Flir tools app on iOS. 4. Condensation function of this device very helpful. 5. The MR77 uses a 9volt battery and battery life is amazing. I also use a FlirONE for thermal, so the other newer moisture meters from Flir were less appealing. Note we also use numerous Fluke IR cameras for moisture mapping. 6. Price is actually a plus. This is a well made professional device that combines many meters in one device. Cons: 1. iOS Flir Tools app needs some work and crashes often for me and other investigators. Not a con on the device. 2. Compared to other manufacturers, FLIR does not specify what is considered dry, borderline, and wet. The flexibility allows the user to set alarms for those readings. However, in professional work it is often helpful for the manufacturer to offer guidance on that for most materials so this can be quoted in reports as backup to inspector interpretation. While I understand the decision from Flir, it would be difficult to adopt this device without the ability to cross reference the Flir MR77 readings against other moisture meter readings. Summary, great device.

Professional grade moisture meter, plus IR camera, plus wood tester.
Purchased this after a fire in the apartment above mine and subsequent water damage. I needed to be able to test for moisture in the walls in order to work out what was wet and hence what would need to be dried out and where there might later be mold growth. This is a professional grade tool which the remediation expert (the people called in by the insurance company to check for water damage and then deal with it) noted was as good as the tool he used. It's well built, comes with a decent warranty and did the job I needed reliably. I was initially a little confused as to how to use it. In reading the manual again now, I realize that I only scratched the surface of what it can do. I had no idea that it has a thermal camera built in!!?! It also has an external pin probe attachment for measuring below the surface of wood and other softer materials, possibly where temperature is an issue. I would strongly recommend taking the ten minutes necessary to read the manual in order to get the most out of this product, BEFORE you use it. This will save you a bunch of dicking around and give you accurate results straight out of the gate. I have no idea how well this holds up to the kinds of professional moisture meters a professional carpenter would use, but given that this costs the same as a basic IR thermal camera, but has much more accurate surface measurement equipment, AND it will test different types of lumber as well , all for the price of a cheap thermal camera, it really can't be beaten. Highly recommended!

Experienced Restorer’s Review: Why the FLIR MR77 Falls Short
I have relied on Tramex moisture meters for decades, and I’ve consistently used FLIR thermal cameras with equal confidence. In 2023, I decided to try the FLIR MR77 as an all-in-one solution, drawn to its design and advertised features. The meter is easy to read, and the readings appeared reasonably accurate. However, usability is a challenge. Switching between GPP and RH/Temp requires extra steps, making it cumbersome in the field. The meter is not intuitive and requires time with the manual to navigate all of the settings. Between purchase in 2023 and today (2025), I used the MR77 fewer than 20 times. I always stored it in the FLIR-designed case with the hammer probe and insulation probe attachments, and I take meticulous care of my equipment—I am a veteran disaster restoration professional, and I pay for my own tools and repairs. Despite this, the sensor pad detached from the housing and the unit stopped functioning. I submitted an RMA and shipped the meter for repair. After waiting three months, I was charged $580. For a tool with such limited use, this level of failure and repair cost is unacceptable. Compared to Tramex and other competitors, the MR77 falls short in build quality, usability, and overall value. I cannot recommend this product and will be returning to Tramex for future meter needs.

Love it already.
It’s a good size and strong enough for North American hardwood. Purchased on the strength of the brand and because it takes standard AA batteries. The last moisture meter I had took coin cells. I don’t abuse this kind of tool, so it should be helping me measure wood drying progress for a long time.

Excellent meter for Techs
Love the MR77 moisture meter. Super easy to use, easy to configure how you like, backlight is very good. I use mainly non-penetrating, but it's nice to have the included penetrating pins just in case. I use this meter almost daily.
