Chemical Guys, Hex-Logic Medium-Heavy Cutting Foam Pad, Orange, 5.5 inch

Great product, works well, delivered on time!

I've taken quite a long break from detailing my cars at home. But we got a new SUV recently, I figured I should get it shined up and protected before it goes out into the world of wayward shopping carts and African dust storms and whatnot. I got the boxes down from the garage shelf and fired up the old DA polisher. But my progress was halted not long after. First, the cheap no-name backing plate started to disintegrate. I delayed it's demise with some tape around the edges. But then my polishing pads turned out to be toast. All of the cheap pads I had gotten from harbor freight somewhere between 5-10 years ago didn't survive the time and heat of storage. The foam turned to dust. The adhesive gluing the velcro to the foam pad gave up. They were all worthless. But you know what wasn't? The Chemical Guys hex pads that I also had in the box. I bought some of them in 2016 and some in 2020. Mostly orange and green pads. And they were all still in great shape. I've used them dozens of times. Washed them in the laundry after each use. And they're good as new, as far as I can tell. So I'm back today to buy some more for lighter polishing, since all my other pads for that purpose went to the trash.

So far so good. I thought two came with the order, but I realize it’s jusy showing the back side in the photo and that’s what I get for ordering it at 3:30 am. My bad. I’ve gotten through about 60% of my car. The pad isn’t as stiff as it was and there’s a little bit of foam missing which is probably from my cars weird pointy door jam spot. I know having more than one pad is ideal, but I did the worst parts of the car first and the rest is basically just a sweep to revive the paint...since my car has been kept pretty decent for the last 3 years, there weren’t that many swirls to remove. As for scratches ... The combination I chose removed about 80% of the light scratches. I can tell the pad is starting to break down though by looking at it sideways it seems to be losing its density, which I was hoping it would last for more than one car, but it is what it is. First time using a DA (myself) on my car and it’s going smoothly with this pad and after testing it, I got it down and I’m not so afraid as I once was thinking I would rip the paint off the car... especially with black paint. This pad seems to be forgiving and on a safer side just in case, so, no complaints for deciding to try this after my research. I’m happy it hasn’t exploded or anything like others have shown and I believe it will make it to finish off the roof. After the prep process, I used a harbor frieght DA, Meguiars 5” backing plate, chemical guys swirl and scratch remover and 5.5” orange cutting pad. Speed setting 5. So far, chemical guys brand is working well for my learning process and I feel it was a safe choice to experiment with.

This pad worked great for polishing and removing light imperfections on my truck. It feels durable, holds product well, and gave a smooth, even finish without much effort. Easy to clean and still holding up after multiple uses. Great quality for the price!

Chemical Guys are the go to people for my car care

I am not sure how to feel about these. I got the orange pad and used it for a while with what seemed like moderate success. However, after not too long the center of the pad began to sink it. I realize that this is due to high heat which is highest at the center of the pad (and backing plate). After this the pad remained permanently sunken in the middle and somewhat useless. And I should note that this happen on I believe the second occasion I used it. It's hardly like I had it for months and it had undergone hours worth of use. The pad had maybe 2.5 hours running time on it, spanned out in 5-10 minute intervals. After this I ended up getting the Meguiar's 5" cutting pad. I have put around 6 hours running time on that in the same manner as the Chemical Guys pad yet the Meguiar's is still in excellent shape, basically looks new. And I think the Meguiar's pad is cutting a bit faster/better. Short story, it does work but make sure it does not get too hot. Either get a few of them and switch them out every couple passes or take lots of breaks to let it cool. You may also have more success with Chemical Guys polishing and finishing pads and those are generally run at lower settings (less heat).

I used it on a Truepower DA with Meguiars Ultimate compound and astonishingly, it gave extremely satisfying result on just a test spot. My car had never been detailed before and had major swirls just because it was never washed correctly. It did most of the major work by cutting through the annoying swirls and scratches and restored it by 90%. By the end, I couldn't make out if the car was in used condition. The pad just needs to be taken care of as it heats up and gets dirty easily. Wash it dish washer soap, dry it and it becomes brand new again. Highly recommended for detailing enthusiasts.
