Everybody needs a rock -- at least that's the way this particular rock hound feels about it in presenting her own highly individualistic rules for finding just the right rock for you. Review: Good read aloud for 2nd grade - Granted, the two-tone illustrations from a book published in 1974 are probably not going to engage today's kids. But the text remains fantastically fresh and exciting. Read it, especially to a group of kids before going on a hunt for the perfect rocks for them. "The size must be perfect. It has to feel easy in your hand when you close your fingers over it. It has to feel jumpy in your pocket when you run. Some people touch a rock a thousand times a day. There aren't many things that feel as good as a rock--if the rock is perfect." Charming, magical, and kid-like. Review: Beautiful - Such a sweet book, illustrations are breathtaking.

Great book
I had this book for my kids when they were little. It was one of their favorites. Just such a nice message that really pinpoints how kids might feel about rocks in a poetic manner. Soโฆ I just recently got this copy for a friends little kids. Hoping they love it as much. Donโt know yet as I just gave it to them. Illustrations are very simple. Itโs just how this author does his books. Itโs not my favorite but his message supersedes that. Itโs a must have for any little kids that love rocks, or adults.

A Beloved Gift - for any age. Keep a stack on-hand!
Curiosity / Celebrations / Ceremonies . . .three ingredients of works by Byrd Baylor that make them essentials in the library for our youngest students as they examine the Essential Questions all humans have pondered. Do we use a multi-cultural framework that includes "all people are curious" and then invites examination of the ways in which humans have responded - stories, revelation, religious beliefs, scientific notions. Four Byrd Baylor titles that need to be part of this exploration: Everybody Needs A Rock, Hawk, I Am Your Brother, The Way To Start A Day, and I'm In Charge Of Celebrations. When I talk to parents and teachers about these titles. .. and read aloud any/all of them. . . they scoop up however many copies I may have on hand that day. I cannot overemphasize the important role they will play. Everybody Needs A Rock is a title I always have a stack of on hand. . . along with a batch of smooth rocks that feel just right in your hand. When I give them as a gift - to anyone of any age, I tell them they have to read the book. . . and go and find their own rock, as instructed!

An oldie but goodie!
This is a great book to give to a child who loves the outdoors. I used to read this book aloud every year in my elementary classroom, and my students always loved it. I've never been a big fan of the illustrations, but the story is so unique that I overlook them. The message in the book is perfect for the kiddo who likes to collect rocks and other items from nature. Humorous guidelines are given to help the child find a rock that's just right.

Love sharing books by Byrd Baylor with the little ones
I purchased this book to read with my grandchildren - ages 5 and 2. When we are in the woods we love to find special rocks and bring them home sometimes. We love to connect with our rocks and this book was a good way to learn about finding a special rock. My 5 year old grandson enjoyed the book more than the 2 year old but I am sure as the little one grows he will enjoy this as well. We are in nature regularly so we can't bring home too many rocks and this book shared how we only need one special rock. I think any little ones who love the outdoors and exploring will enjoy this book.

Books for all ages
I love these books by Bryd Baylor, illustrated by Peter Parnell. They can be read to small children who will quickly be able to read them before they are actual readers. Adults will appreciate the sensitivity of the words and the pictures and the identification of all of life in an interconnected sense of all. I spent many years on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and New Mexico, and can identify with the author's appreciation of the land and Native peoples. thank you for sharing your talents with the rest of us.
