For plug welded overlapping seams I apply two thin coats to both sides, let dry a half hour, fit the joint, scrape away the primer in the plug weld hole (I use a ground down drill bit of similar size), and then MIG weld with no splatter. I prefer the zinc vs copper version of this product. I find the copper version to produce more splatter and porous welds.
