I'd read the book at my AirBnB and then apply what I learned when I was out hiking. I found this to be a fantastic resource at just the right level of detail. Even the second half of the book, dedicated entirely to simply summaries of key characteristics of the most common birds of America, felt valuable but a breeze to read through. It give you a sense of what features/patterns of recognition are most comment when trying to single out a bird species from a set of similar-looking characters. The first half of the book also had a great introduction to how this works in abstract, as well as a good introduction to birding culture and various insider terms and concepts.s Review: Great for kids! - My son received this for his birthday. He carries it around everywhere. He loves the facts and the great photos for identification purposes.

very happy
I feed about 350 birds every day. They are my bug control in summer. I have sparrels, cardinal's, gold finch and doves. BUT some times I get birds I have never seen. 2 yrs ago I had a pair come in spring that shape of a sparrel but white, all white. All I could think was a canary. Looked on net and they were a wild bird and migrated through our area. Stayed all summer and left in fall never to come again. This summer I have a new 1. Shape of sparrel but dark blue or blk and white on belly. Stayed all summer and still here in winter. That is why I got the book. Today I finally looked. Yes I found it. In the song bird part I found it. Don't remember name, but is a native bird, does not migrate. The book? I grew up farm boy, and hunter, so I knew many of the birds in it. The book takes some gettin used to. Not a hard back but very solid and pages are thick. It has ALL the birds, easy to use and find. 1Rst I looked in song birds no go then went to index for sparrels. Went that page, flipped a couple and there he was. The book will last forever, unless U loose it like i may U wont need another. Last summer I got into humming birds. If U are a bird lover U must try that and also buy this book.

Great Intro Book
This is a great introductory book to learning about birds & bird watching. It includes a picture of each bird, its characteristics, their preferred locations, & behaviors. As soon as I started flipping through the pages, I came across a few different fun & interesting facts on birds. I’m overall delighted with this book.

Fun and full of info.
I bought a couple of bird feeders not to long ago. My daughter and I started seeing all kinds of birds visit the feeders. We were curious about the different birds and wanted to know the names and other information about them. I found the Bird Watching for Beginners on Amazon. As soon as it arrived my daughter and I grabbed our new book and camped out in front of our window and outside in the yard to see if we could name the birds we saw. This book is awesome! Thanks to the illustrations we learned we have type types of wood woodpeckers that visit our feeders. We learned that male and female finches have different coloring. The book also provides sections to help to properly pronounce the names. My daughter and I both have enjoyed this purchase.
