A fast-paced, action-packed read
If you like to read fast-paced, action-packed adventure novels then I think that Semper Fi Brothers could be just the book for you! A C Turner was inspired to create this tale by his family's military exploits and the action includes both the Vietnam War and the modern day Syrian conflict. I felt that Turner tried to make this a story about found brotherhood as much as one about the violence of war. Certainly O'Malley's perceived mistakes in his war as a youth seem to inform his desire to atone late in his life. I would have liked to have understood more how Shamus became the dysfunctional Gunny as these years are skipped - even the fact of his name change is jumped over unless one has recently read the book's synopsis. I hadn't so I spent several chapters believing 'Gunny' must be another descendant in the family tree we had been following! The Semper Fi Brothers narrative keeps up a blistering pace once it takes off. It is made up of short chapters to so this adds to the sense of speed and excitement. Turner weaves in a little humour and pathos too. I think this novel would appeal to American war movie fans and possibly to gamers too because much of the book's focus is right in the centre of the action.
