Great movie, action packed, great storyline, never a dull moment, a classic!! I have watched this movie many times, still very entertaining and great replay value, definitely worth your time and money!

After watching the original dozens of times and still finding it inspirational (if maybe a bit dated) after almost 40 years, I eagerly awaited the launch of Maverick in the theatres. Saw it 4 times now with friends and family members, and wanted to add the DVD to my library so I could watch it regardless of whether On Demand was available. No need to elaborate at length on the subject matter or exceptional attention paid to detail by Tom Cruise in developing the movie plot and filming the action scenes. Quite sure other reviewers cover that. I have always believed in the need for a strong national defense and the need to honor our active duty military and veterans. It has some modern touches without falling into a woke ditch. Personalities of the flyers and ground crew, and naturally the "love interest", all exhibited a good balance of bravado, humor, anxiety, fear, and sadness at moments (Val Kilmer scenes). Few sequels equal the quality of the original, but this one does, and certainly edges it out in special effects but no surprise there. This movie had me captured in the opening scenes with the 'Mach 10' 6th (7th gen) fighter test reminiscent of a 21st century interpretation of the famed SR-71. Sexy, powerful, cool, loud -- and know what is going to happen - but who cares - sip your soda and gulp down some more pop corn - the ride has begun. The audio and visual quality of the BlueRay disk is up to snuff and renders decent with my 2K TV and my older 720p model too. I like the extras. And the price was reasonable and shipping was fast. What is not to like? Checks all the boxes. So pleased that Tom Cruise made this happen.

Who needs CGI when you have the real thing? Tom Cruise refused to do a Top Gun sequel until the flying could be done with live action and there was a worthy script. It was worth the wait. Needless to say, once we get past the Darkstar fiction (which is in significant part well-done state-of-the-art CGI), the aerial scenes in Top Gun: Maverick are cinematically spectacular. Watch the extra features: those are real F-18 Super Hornets flown by real military pilots with the actual actors (after months of training) experiencing real flight conditions. Amazing stuff. And unlike many sequels, the story line not only follows the original plot, but expands and improves upon it. You must know the original plot to get many of references in this sequel: Maverick is still the same crazy-loyal character, pushing limits in his flying, regardless of the personal cost, while struggling to do right by the people around him. We can guess that Charlie got that pomotion and went to Washington, and Penny has been an on-again, off-again love interest over the intervening years (Penny was also mentioned by name as a former girlfriend in the original Top Gun: Meg Ryan line in the bar scene, just before they all move to the piano to perform Great Balls of Fire). Doing right in that relationship, late as it may be, is just one of several original plots lines that gets resolved in a very satisfying way, along with trying to do right with Bradley while honoring Carole's dying wishes, and his loyalty and protectiveness of his Darkstar team and the mission trainees. The scenes with Ice, showing the evolution of their relationship from the original, may showcase Tom Cruise's best acting ever. A Best Picture Oscar nomination well deserved.
