A BRIEF HISTORY OF SPAIN

I wanted a primer on Spanish history and thought this would do the trick.I loved the little boxes within the text on little excerpted subjects (eg Picasso, Orwell etc). However, up until the last quarter of the book the author did often fall into the trap of just listing names and dates. Kings / Queens / others would appear for one paragraph and then never be heard from again at an alarming rate. It was just too much information - if someone's contribution to Spanish history is only worth passing mention in one paragraph then it's probably safe to say they can be left out entirely. As a result this 300 odd page book took me a month to read. I wouldn't recommend it unfortunately.

This certainly provides a concise Spanish history. However you have to be willing to persevere with a frustratingly mediocre English style. A large proportion of his sentences would benefit if they were rephrased into more comprehensible and better English! Hardly a typical Exeter University professor?
