A wonderful read-aloud that's so much more than math
If you're looking for a picture book for the math-loving kid in your life, you're in luck. If you're looking for a picture book for the math-loving kid in your life that isn't just about math, you've hit the jackpot. This wonderful read-aloud is a perfect example of a multi-layered story. There's the love of math, the recognition of personal learning/studying styles (e.g. needing quiet), problem solving via the scientific method (observation/hypothesis/experimentation), the importance of empathetic communication, and the value of finding common ground despite our differences. All that, and I haven't even mentioned the baking (3/4 cup FTW!). I bought this for the math-loving kid in my life. We'll be rereading it time and again for the math-love + all of the above.

A math-loving girl creatively solves her noisy neighbor problem
This is precious.I've seen a lot of people praise the inclusion of math without any message of trying to get kids interested in the subject, which I loved too. But what I really found relatable about this story is main character Isobel's need for quiet to be able to concentrate on her work. As someone with sensory sensitivities, I felt Isobel's frustration deeply, and I think a lot of kids will too.The ways Isobel chooses to solve her noise problems were cute and perfectly illustrated, and I loved the friendship that developed between Isobel and Bernadette by the end of the story.Such a cute story that should be really engaging for read-alouds especially.

Very charming story, my kids loved the surprise at the end!
We love Isobel Adds It Up! My 7yo and 3yo thrilled at the surprise ending and, as a parent, I enjoyed sharing a book with my girls about a girl who loves math. The clever way the author wrote about Isobel’s love of numbers allowed me to integrate number recognition talk with my 3yo and we searched out those numbers on each page. This is a fun, playful book with beautiful illustrations. As a fun bonus, Isobel has a little dog who adds loads of humor to the art, my children enjoyed pointing it out on each page. We have already had requests for repeat readings.
