So juwel recommend changing this yearly, why?. The bacteria won’t colonise overnight and surely won’t just vanish after 12 months of use.

I have not changed any of my Cirax cartridges so far & no intention of doing so unless I start to see ammonia or nitrite rises. I have 3 in my filter & give one of them a shake & rinse in the water removed from the tank during water changes. I clean just one of the cartridges as above every 2 weeks or so. Wouldn't do them all together! Ammonia & Nitrites always at zero.

Cirax is a ceramic media which holds the bacteria required for eliminating ammonia and nitrite in the aquarium,bear in mind this bacteria does not occur overnight and takes time to become established. The green filter in the cage of your system is the Nitrax filter which performs a similar task and is the one to replace with the Cirax cartridge.If you are having problems with your aquarium water,changing to this media will not immediately provide a solution and give you the same problem.The secret is patience and to use a water treatment that works,for this I recommend Seachem Stabilty, it will mature your filter if you follow the instructions. I had problems getting my Bioflow filter to mature and tried virtually everything on the market to get it to work, Seachem Stability and Seachem Prime are the only two water treatments I use now and I never have water issues,hope this is of use,good luck.
