Greater Than Yourself: The Ultimate Lesson of True Leadership

Reads like a really good novel
This is the first business book I've read in a LONG time that I can truly say I enjoyed. It read like a novel for it was very well written. It was literally a page turner. Why? Because it was written in the format of a story that was directly related to Steve's experience with different people who first brought the GTY concept to his attention.I also liked his authenticity throughout the book. He admits right from the start he thought GTY was some hokey-pokey-pie-in-the-sky concept that would never work. But as the "so-called novel" progressed, he began to really catch on. Although he doesn't talk too much about the mentee he eventually chose as his "GTY project," he skillfully brings out how and why this is not only noble but very practical, despite his doubts at the beginning.Let me just say that as a result of reading his book, I've taken on a GTY mentee. While that might not faze you in the least, it does represent the first time in my entire life that I've undertaken a mentee in a deep, meaningful way.I would say this is one of the best business books I've read in a long time. It's not stuffed with fluff. It really brought out my emotions. I found myself laughing, crying and smiling. It made me contemplate the consequences of taking on a GTY project - it's definitely not for everyone. It takes courage, commitment and strength to develop any kind of mentor/mentee relationship; especially one that constitutes a GTY project. As a former stockbroker, I'd say "It's a buy."

Good, but hardly great
OK...guess I'm going to get blasted, but anyway I think there needs to be a voice of reason here. First, I've seen Steve in person and he is great. Second, I've read Radical Leap and Radical Edge. So, I figure I've got at least as good a perspective on this as anyone. While Steve has done an admirable job at creating another business allegory/parable, with practical usefulness, it is hardly original and, unfortunately, fails to grasp the selfishness of most people. While it is an excellent call to "give yourself away," that call was brilliantly lived out by a person who pored themslelf into twelve others and changed the world two millenia ago. Perhaps those that want to help others be greater than themslves should study His life and teaching in the original version.

The Ultimate Lesson in Leadership: Live it!
I have known Steve's writing long enough to know that if he puts something in writing, it has to be true, if not an understatement. This book definitely lives up to its subtitle and thoroughly explains the concept as clearly as humanly possible. This is Steve's third book and in Steve's unforgettable "parable" style. Again Steve meets with some under-the-radar leaders, i.e. business leaders that you wouldn't think are business leaders. Don't Google the characters of the book. As with The Radical Leap, The Radical Edge andΒ The Radical Leap Re-Energized: Doing What You Love in the Service of People Who Love What You Do , they don't really exist (or their real names have been changed). This book lists three simple things you can do to help those around you become better than yourself and having your relationships profit from doing so- three simple ideas that could change the lives of those around you. I could tell you what they are, but then the whole message of the book would be lost.It is one of those books that, once you begin reading it, you just can't put it down until you've finished it, making it a great weekend read!I would HIGHLY recommend picking upΒ The Radical Leap Re-Energized: Doing What You Love in the Service of People Who Love What You Do Β and reading this first. Then immediately get into Greater Than Yourself. Then you will definitely get a fond understanding of the concept of Extreme Leadership. You may not be able to successfully Google the names of the characters in the book, but definitely peruse the names of the people at the end of the book. You might find someone you know... We have to do a book presentation for one of my college leadership courses; which at first truthfully I didn't have any desire of doing & we had to choose from a list of books given to us. Immediately the GTY title stuck out to me like a sore thumb & I was immediately drawn to it. It's changed my way of thinking in more ways than one. This book helped me to realize that it's not about self but instead about pouring all your knowledge into someone else without expecting anything in return; simply bcuz it's the human thing to do. By doing this you have to follow 3 simple principles: Expand Yourself, Give Yourself, & Replicate Yourself unselfishly, which is the ultimate test of true Leadership, bcuz often times we feel a need to not give everything we know which is not allowing yourself to excel but is keeping you bound by selfishness. You're making someone who you trust and see potential in your GTY Project, with one simple rule they must in return find their next 'GTY Project' & keep it going. So ask yourself who can you help raise up & become your very own GTY Project. Allow this unique teaching to become a lifestyle. Awesome Read!!!!! πππππ Can't wait to enlighten my classmates with my presentation that's coming up.
