Hamilton (Vocal Selections and Piano)

This book arrived in a few days in excellent condition! It has many songs, such as ‘The Schuyler Sisters’, ‘Wait for It’ and ‘Satisfied’. The melody is not written into the piano accompaniment but rather separately, which is excellent as it means that it sounds far nicer when accompanied by a singer, as oppose to other sheet music. In addition, the vocal harmonies are practically identical to the soundtrack and all the songs are in the original key. The only drawback is that the book does not contain all the songs on the soundtrack, particularly ‘Say No to This’, however they are already PLENTY of songs and I would not expect that the book could fit any more. This is TOTALLY worth the price, which is rare for me to say when it comes to music books.

This is tricky to play, due to the speed of the music vs how many staves are in each system due to the layering of vocal harmony lines above it, But still is great :) Different to most musical song books due to less piano music as a basis due to many songs being raps andaccompanied by drum snare clicks/rim-shots/etc & built up with vocal harmonies. I imagine this would be good to use as a basis for an acapella group, or classroom teaching of harmonic language with GCSE & A level vocal groups (depending on the level and confidence of the singers).

Purchased as a gift for my daughter so she can familiarise herself with the music and refresh her piano playing skills. She was delighted and it is really motivating her to prepare for seeing the show.

As a HamFan, I love this. So great and contains the most iconic songs from Hamilton! I’M NOT THROWIN’ AWAY MY SHOT!

the songs are difficult (i’m only really a beginner tho), not all the songs are in there but it’s great quality and exactly as pictured

The music is easy to read, and the book is good quality. There are, however, songs I would like to play which aren't in the book, but c'est la vie.

Bought as a present for a 14 year old girl who is very musical (sings, acts and also plays the piano!) as well as being a great Hamilton fan. Looks good. I am sure she will love it!

Ein Must-Have für Musical und Hamilton Fans

Need a singer but great arrangements that help capture the feel of the show. Missing a few songs that would have been nice but understand that there is already a lot of stuff in there!

"Hamilton: Vocal Selections" provides vocal scores for 17 songs in Hamilton: An American Musical. (See the end of this review for a full list of songs.) The book includes vocal lines for the main characters and usually puts all the ensemble's vocal parts together on one musical staff. The orchestration is reduced to a piano part, and some songs (e.g. "The Schuyler Sisters", "Washington on Your Side") also include some notation for drums, claps, finger snaps, and other percussive sounds. The piano parts range in difficulty from intermediate to intermediate-advanced. The score includes chords as well as a very faithful reduction of the orchestra parts. All songs, as far as I can tell, are in the same keys as they are on the Broadway cast recording. Most of the songs are presented exactly as they sound on the Broadway cast recording. A few songs (e.g. "Helpless") have a few extra bars of introduction. "That Would Be Enough" has been modified into a solo for Eliza; after the first two bars, the score cuts straight to the line "Look at where you are". I don't believe any other songs in this book have been abridged in a significant way, although in "Helpless" and "Satisfied", the parts with the dialogue between Angelica, Eliza, and Hamilton ("Where are you taking me?" "I'm about to change your life", etc.) have been excised. The Kindle version of this book is basically scans of the pages of the print book. I do NOT recommend getting the Kindle version of this book unless you have a very big tablet to view it on. There are some nice treats in the score that can't be conveyed in a soundtrack. Some of my favorites are the tempo marking for "Burn" ("Moderate 2, icy") and the bit of "The Room Where It Happens" where the score reads "[ENSEMBLE screams in chaos]". Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alex Lacamoire, and Hal Leonard have produced an attractive, thick, and faithful songbook for Hamilton. I hope you enjoy playing through this songbook as much as I have been, and I hope this review helps you decide if the book is right for you.
