How is adjusted the resistance? Is this effective?

You cannot adjust the resistance, hence why my review gave it 2 stars - after a few weeks it becomes too easy, and you have to workout for longer and longer. My answer was to use ankle weights and a weighted vest, but it would be a whole lot easier if you could simple adjust on machine - hope this helps

I'm 5ft is this going to be to big?

My wife is 5' 1" and uses it without any trouble. You only need to adjust the height settings to suit you, which is easy to do.

customers are saying it makes a noise/squeaky this is a bit off-putting - can the sliding parts be greased or oiled to stop the noise ?

It's pretty quiet , sounds like someone with a small saw. That is the sound of the cable pulled up and down. We've two small kids and they sleep through it with ease.
