Multifunctional Compass, Northern Hemisphere, Compact Waterproof Navigation Comapss for Hiking & Adventure

Fantastic compass, doesn't need a battery (hahaha). The bezel ring is phenomenal, and the sighting wire is great for getting an accurate azimuth. However cons- -This is too expensive (started at like 20 bucks) and the price just keeps going up due to inflation. I've bought one of these about every 2 years since 2018, and they last about a year or two under constant use until the water evaporates inside and the compass isn't pointing north. -Needs a competitor compass wrist watch maker, because this is very frustrating, there really is no comparison in land wrist compasses. Moscow compasses comes close, but they don't really have an everyday wrist version. -The velcro wrist band sucks. It starts stripping apart, it's too thin. I've frequently used NATO wrist bands - Too many right-angle corners, very frustrating as it can cut into skin, etc... Everything needs to be rounded-off.

Great product. Convenient wrist wear and super light weight. Very luminous card. Easily works well with a map. The Velcro strap might want to be reconsiderd. I've replaced the Velcro strap with a Nato strap.

In a week, I have the most important ultra-trail race of the year on my calendar, 110 kilometers (70 miles). I wanted to supplement the GPS navigation on my Garmin watch with non-electronic ground navigation, so I would be using two compasses and two waypoints. I did detailed research and chose the best wrist compasses I could find: the Suunto M-9. When the package arrived, I was very happy, but as soon as I opened the padded cardboard bag from Amazon, I discovered that something was wrong. I didn't even have to open the individual compass boxes; it was clear that one worked freely and the other was stuck, not moving at all, only a couple of degrees at most. I hope this was an error by Suunto's Quality Control Department, firstly, and then an unfortunate second error by the seller in packing and shipping it without noticing the defect. Fortunately, the second Suunto M-9 compass works very well. I must say, it impressed me from the first moment: The packaging is very nice; upon opening the box, you can tell it's a quality product from a solid, reputable company. The compass and mount are made of plastic, very lightweight, excellent for trail runners who want to minimize the weight they carry. Regarding its performance, it's adequate. I was able to test it against another pair of compasses from a different brand, as you can see in the photos, and it's quite accurate. It's clear that a wrist compass isn't a precision tool; if you need a more precise compass, there are other options—larger, heavier, and requiring manual operation, not with the ease and simplicity of a wrist compass. I'm satisfied with the accuracy of the Suunto M-9; it was exactly what I was looking for. While not bulky, the Suunto M-9 compass is large enough to be clearly visible and avoid confusing the user. I took a picture of the compass on my wrist next to my enormous 51mm Garmin Enduro 3 watch, just as I'll be using them during the ultratrail race. This photo shows that even though the compass and watch are very close together, the compass's functionality isn't affected; the north reading remains accurate. As you can see in the photos, I haven't used the original Velcro straps. Instead, I bought some BARTON NATO-style straps from Amazon. They are a standard 10 inches long and 18mm wide, made of very soft canvas—a good option if you don't want to use the Velcro strap. I bought this 18mm wide canvas strap because I wanted to use two compasses on my wrist for land navigation: a Suunto M-9 on the outside of my wrist, like a watch, and a second compass at a 90-degree angle to the first, aligned with my thumb. The purpose of these two compasses was to facilitate navigation on the ground. The larger Suunto M-9 would always provide the primary navigation, but if I had to run with trekking poles, it would be much easier to use the smaller compass aligned with my thumb for navigation, without having to raise my arm to check my wrist. I'm explaining all this so you don't do it; it's a bad idea. The Suunto compass has a stronger magnetism and interferes with the smaller compass when they are close together, within 10 centimeters. The reflective material on the Suunto M-9 isn't good. I tried to take the best picture, but the compass itself isn't very clear; it's blurry and confusing. You should consider whether this is an important feature for you. This isn't a problem for a trail runner, since ultrarunners wear a headlamp at night, which illuminates the direction they're looking. I hope this review helps other future buyers. The compass deserves a five-star rating, and the Suunto brand deserves the same rating as well. However, I had to point out the mistake made with my order, so I'm giving it four stars.

This is a fantastic little compass! Wear it on your wrist, with the handy velcro strip. It's of durable, water-resistant plastic, and lightweight. Using this compass to get your bearings is easy, and a snap! View the compass card from the top, and your "route-of-march" using the incorporated window. It's small, and unobtrusive. The card floats in a damping fluid. For a magnetic based compass this one is a good bet for the price!

Good little wrist compass. The compass fits my Ranger band watch cover with protective over flap. The compass is good for quick movements in a specific direction. For land navigation for a long distance I would prefer to use a Military Lens-etic compass or a base plate compass like the Suunto MC 2. This compass is very sensitive to metal or other electronic devices. If you place it next to your watch it will give you a bad reading. If your carrying a weapon or standing next to a metal structure it will give you a wrong reading. This compass is just to get you pointed in the right direction until you can pull out your actual compass that you normally navigate with. It is a convenient way to start going in the right direction for short distances. It has a compass card with triangle that points to magnetic north. It has a rotating capsule for setting direction to target. It has a bearing index for reading numerical bearing from compass card. It has orienting indicators for aligning with cardinal directions to find direction to target. It has a notch and window for precise sighting of an object. It does not have a way to change declination. You have to do that in your head mathematically or by using your paper map and orientating the map to its declination. I do recommend this little wrist compass for EDC. Ensure you get the compass for your hemisphere.

The wristband is cheap and flimsy. I doubt it will hold up to steady outdoor use especially if you’re sweating and going through brush. The compass itself requires you to be extremely still or it will not ‘settle’. Not reliable if you’re a wilderness trekker.

Perfect weight and size. I used a nato strap for the band instead of the poopy one it came with. Love these things. Take care of it and it’ll last a lifetime

Es una brújula muy útil para navegación, por tenerla siempre disponible sin ocupar las manos. Suelo usar otra brújula de mano para estudiar el mapa y definir mi azimut, y esta Suunto para navegar. Su sistema es de fácil lectura y precisa para definir el rumbo. Solo debes practicar un ratillo antes de meterte en la jungla con ella. :P El único punto negativo es la correa... no me gusta para nada. Pero por lo menos es segura y estable, y no es tan mala a punto de quitarle una estrellita.

L'indication de l'azimut, même à seulement 5 degrés près, est rendue très pratique par la fenêtre et les encoches de visée. Allier une bonne boussole et la fonctionnalité d'un compas c'est très bien pensé. Mais attention néanmoins à un léger effet "de grippage": sur certains angles (deux angles sur le miens) il a tendance à rester un peu coincé et il faudra donc se tourner dans un sens puis l'autre tout en faisant varier l'inclinaison du bras pour obtenir un azimut sûr...

The Suunto M-9 wrist compass is a handy, lightweight tool for quick direction checks. Its strap-on design keeps it accessible, and the side-reading window makes bearings easy. It’s durable and reliable, but limited in precision due to its small size. Great as a backup or for quick orientation, but not a replacement for a full-sized compass.

Ito great provided you understand it limits. Generally I find orienting myself to the terrain fairly easy, but this provides and excellent backup in case my GPS and main compass fail. Also it's quite good for getting a quick approximate bearing on the go.
