15 Minute job to assemble and fit to wall and works perfectly
I always read the worst and best reviews and it worried me that on person who claimed he was a chartered engineer was scathing in the review He claimed the instructions were bad, it was badly designed and the connectors were wrong. However, the overall majority gave 5 stars so I purchased one.I would describe my self as in the Homer Simpson category when it comes to DIY. I always do my best but often end up have to start again. With this however it was different. I did not even need the instructions as it was obvious to anyone with half a brain cell how it assembles. 5 minutes to assemble it, 10 minutes to drill the holes in the wall and then fit it all together. The only deviation I took from the kit was to use rawlbolts rather than rawlplugs. The amount of use my hose gets requires a firmer fitting to the wall.Excellent, no trouble, no leaks. I can only imagine that the chartered engineer was having a bad hair day, got the connectors the wrong way round and that people who say it leaks have probably cross threaded the connectors.Great bit of kit. Well done Hozelock.

Works fine but the instructions are RUBBISH
It arrives in pieces and there are no instructions in the box. The instructions are a random selection of tiny barely decipherable drawings on 3 different flaps of the box in no particular order. It's bizarre.Assembly is not particularly intuitive but once you actually "get it" then the assembly makes sense. My assembly advice would be:1) First attach the short hose to the centre spindle. It takes quite a bit of force to get it on and is easiest when not assembled.2) Attach the inline hose connector to the other end (not the quick release connector as pictured on the box) not forgetting to put the spring inside this bit of hose. The spring is to stop this pipe collapsing on the tight turn around inside the unit3) Assemble the spindle with the 2 body parts of the reel making sure you feed the pipe through to the reel area where it can be attached to the hose.Feed the hose as you're pushing it all together. See the box pictures for how this works. If you leave it until after you've tightened the 3 bolts it will be hard to bend into place. The triangle on the spindle sits between the two sides of the reel pieces and is clamped together between them. Tighten the 3 bolts by hand as much as possible as it's fiddly holding it all together. It'd be hard to use a screwdriver while holding everything in place, it wobbles all over the place. The nuts sit flush in a hex slot and are held in place with sticky tape. Don't un-tape them as I did, they'll fall all over the place if you do. Don't forget to put the 3 washers on these bolts and use a screwdriver at the end to tighten it all firmly. Reviewer "HRC" complained he wanted 4 washers. I assume he mistakenly used them on the 4 screws in the wall rather than the 3 bolts holding the unit together.4) The final assembly step is attaching the handle. Reviewer "G Powell" claimed it kept falling off and the plastic end piece didn't fit. They were trying to fit the handle back to front! The handle tube is narrower at one end than the other. The narrower end fits on the spindle not the wider end. The small spindle on the reel that you are slotting this tube onto has clips on the end that snap in place inside this tube. You can feel the ridge it clips to inside the tube. The problem is that it is an incredibly tight fit and requires considerable force to snap-lock it into place. (try WD40) The yellow end piece then slots in the other end in the slightly wider hole. This is an easy mistake to make with their RUBBISH instructions. The tube slides on (and off) nice and smoothly the wrong way round. At this point it is fully assembled and ready to slide down into place on the bracket you screw to the wall. For that I swapped out the provided spade screws with similar ones with a Phillips "x" head instead. It's hard to use spade screws with a drill. The ones supplied will work but be more of a pain to screw in place.5) The final attachment is the hose roller guide. I've found this more useful than I expected. The reel I was replacing didn't have one and this guide made spooling the hose much easier. You still have to guide it by hand but the roller guide ensures the hose is coming from a consistent direction with consistent tension.Further make sure you look at the pictures on the box when deciding where and how to position the roller guide. Intuition tells you to position it so that the hose will pass through it in a straight line on a path of least resistance. That is NOT what you want. When you pull on the hose you want it to bend through the guide rollers with resistance making them work on the hose. This transfers the pulling pressure from the reel to the roller bracket and retains an even tension on the hose between the reel and the roller bracket. Some final comments:1) It will take a full 50m Hozelock 12.5mm hose though it is packed to capacity.2) A good tip written on the box is to have the hose full of water before you begin spooling the hose onto the reel. This stops the hose being crushed reducing water volume/pressure. I hadn't done this on the previous reel. The result was that the water exiting the fan spray at the other end travelled 50cm (probably 25%) further in every direction than it had done with the same hose packed on without water inside it first.3) Reviewer "Kayarde" mentioned the wire clip falling off causing the reel to fall off the spool. This shouldn't happen. This clip allows release to access the inners of the spool for lubrication purposes. The problem is that it can slide in from either direction and neither is the obvious correct direction. The correct direction is down from the top when the spool is connected to the wall. His was probably put back in upside down at some point during its use leaving gravity to work its magic as it doesn't really clip into place. Again....RUBBISH instructions! It was far more of a pain to assemble and fit than it should be but once you're done it is a good reel that doesn't stick out too far from the wall. I probably would prefer the wall bracket to rely on more than just gravity to hold the entire assembly in place. Some sort of locking mechanism would be an improvement. However a full pipe is heavy so you'd really have to be abusing it to yank it out while in use. Finally if this long review seems confusing and daunting you will probably remember bits of it as you meander through assembly causing it to suddenly make sense. EG I'd read all the reviews before I began assembly and when I reached slotting the handle in place I approached it with suspicion because I recalled the review saying it kept falling off. It helped me get it right.A final message to Hozelock - a single sheet of A4 instructions not written or drawn by an idiot that are in assembly order and easy to read would go a very long way towards reducing the number of negative reviews people write about this product. Even your website doesn't have instructions for assembling this particular reel. It's a very good reel when assembled correctly but I imagine the homes of Britain are littered with these reels assembled in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways with owners wishing they hadn't bothered.....the end.

Expensive but quality and robust
These are the easiest to install and use, they are expensive though, but I heard the other similar type with a triangular shaped bracket break. I bought this as a friend has one and it's lasted him years, thought they've skimped on features with addition hose tips, on this one they're just plastic, not actual spares. It's a little tricky to put together and there's a metal coil that goes inside the inner hose and the hook attaches to the unit outlet. Time will tell if this is as robust as the older one my friend has, but otherwise very happy with it.

Excellent hose reel
This is a great hose reel that does the job perfectly. I bought this one to replace my old hozelock reel which had lasted over 20 years.

Does exactly as you’d expect
Purchased this as a replacement for an older model which eventually broke (very old)Does exactly as you’d expect. Note there is a little self assembly required, but very easy.

Use your own fixings
The assembly could be better designed, the 3 bolts that connect the 2 halves together go through small nuts held in place by tape, only issue is that these fall out easily so can be tricky, but once together all good. My big bugbear is the screws provided for securing the bracket to the wall. Firstly they are slotted and not phillips/pozidrive which frankly are a pain and not suitable for a wall fixing screw imo, secondly they are made of cheese, the 1st screw broke half way down that I then needed to drill out and ended up using my own screws which I should have done in the 1st place.Performs well so far used with an ultimate hose and no leaks. Despite the hose reel claiming to be for 60m hoses, my 30m hose wound tightly almost fills the reel, I would say 40m capacity max unless using a cheap thinner walled hose.
