ALTRAWomen's TIMP 4 Trail Running Shoe

Trail runner is super happy
The best thing about this brand is the toebox. This is the first shoe I have ever run in that I did not get blisters. And I have run thousands of miles... so that's saying something! If you aren't used to a zero drop shoe, just make sure you don't take off on a 20 miler without getting used to it. The first few times I ran in these, I ran 5 miles and then switched out. The last time I ran in them, I ran 15 miles of a 50k and then switched to a pair I had been running in for a while. I do like the zero drop as it feels like a more natural run.

Amazingly comfortable and great for hiking!
I liked everything about this shoe except the extra long shoe laces! I imagine the length is for those who lace them all the way up past the usual height. These shoes are so comfortable, I can wear them all day long-something I have never been able to do with any shoe.!

The Winner
I tried on a lot of Altras before choosing this one. I liked it better than the Lone Peaks and the more current Timp 5, which has too much excess room in the toe box. These had a good fit across the ball of the foot, supported the arch and mid foot and had no slippage in the heel. Just right for me. Other popular brands run too small at ball and toe for my feet, which have a natural toe spread even though my feet are not unusually wide.

Loved these shoes, but...
Had to order a full size larger than my regular shoe size. I normally wear 6.5 and the 7.5 fit great with a bit of extra room in the toe box, which you want when hiking. I loved the fit, quality, and look of these shoes, but the tongue of the shoe is made of a stiff plastic-y material that cut into the top of my foot so I had to return them. If you wear a taller sock, this may not be an issue for you.

My wife lives in them
My wife is on her feet all day so she lives in these shoes. She rotates through a few pair using them for work, running and when retired yard work. She likes the width, and comfort and has convinced her mother, sister and daughters that they are a must have shoe.

Great travel Altra, but not a great Altra
I am a long time Altra fan - this is the 6th model I’ve tried. I run, trail run, and hike in my other Altras, and my feet love the shape and zero drop. I read all the reviews on Amazon before I bought these Timps and I agree with them all. The tongue is sharp - they’re fine after you break them in or even early on with crew socks, but if you’re expecting to wear them with ankle socks right out of the box you’ll regret it. Compared to Altra’s other trail shoes like the Lone Peak line, both the upper and the sole of the Timp are flimsy and weak, the tread of the Timp is way less sharp and grippy than that of the Lone Peak, and they are much narrower than other “classic” Altra styles. I don’t see these lasting forever, or even more than 100-150 miles, but I was okay with that because I didn’t buy them to be a high-mileage running shoe.I bought these as a hopeful “do everything” travel shoe. They are lightweight and packable and quick-dry. The teal color is beautiful and they are attractive enough to wear with street clothes, fine for casual dinners, tours, or even work trips with a laid-back company. They are super squishy so great for long easy walks. They were also on sale for $80 which makes them competitive with other shoes designed for travel or walking or “athleisure”. They certainly won’t work for real trails and also won’t hold up to long road runs, but they would be fine for long walks, quick jogs, workouts, and light “hikes”, the kind of stuff one does while traveling to stay fit and explore, but not to train seriously or compete. Overall, I think these would be a super travel shoe for someone who wants a comfy, zero-drop, wider toe box shoe to do everything they need from a sneaker while packing light, but definitely don’t buy these as an alternative to Altra’s other better shoes if you plan to run or hike seriously or long-distance.I ended up returning them - I prefer my Altras to be wider in the toe and lower stack, and these being so squishy yet narrow felt unstable for me. I felt that these were too much of a divergence from the Altras that I love, so I opted to clean up an old almost-dead pair of Lone Peaks for my travel shoe of choice (since the Lone Peak 6 upper still looks brand new, just muddy, and the sole is still intact, just not as toothy, even after 400 miles of trail running).

Best shoes ever.
Very comfortable. I love the grip on the sides. Less sliding on loose gravel and none on wet grass. It has a wee bit arch support and I need more as I tend to pronate some with one foot. I may buy an insert. I wish Altra would make these with the max cushion or add an arch support and the grip on the sole to the Olympia 5, which has the maximum cushion Altra offers.

Worst quality Altras I’ve ever had
Do not buy these shoes! History- I have been wearing Altras for nearly 10 years. Usually, I get the lone peaks, but was looking for some more cushion and really loved this color way. I ignored the poor reviews thinking it couldn’t really be that bad.Pros- the color is my favorite and is beautiful in person. The cushioning is wonderful and they are very comfortable.Cons-1. the tongue of this shoe is so incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. Most shoes have a hollowed out arc to accommodate your ankle, these are the exact opposite of it so the tongue slides funny… or you can fold it funny and it can kind of work. Wearing ankle socks is out of the question because it feels like it’s cutting your ankle open. I honestly didn’t think it would bother me much, but it SUCKS.2. The quality of these is garbage. I’ve only had these for 3 months. It has been cold so these have been worn primarily inside I’m not harsh environments and they are falling apart!! I’ve never had this problem before! I have my “work” lone peaks that I’ve kept for dirty work for over 5 years and they are worn, but don’t have holes. I could understand if I’d been out running around on trails and banging then around, but outside of walking in and out of work/store/etc these have been treated with care.Altras are usually amazing, but this shoe isn’t it. :(

Second pair aren't as good for some reason.
These are the second pair of Timps I've had, both the exact same model and just in different colors. The structure of these just isn't the same. The right shoe sits crooked somehow and no matter the lacing I can't get it to sit right. No idea why. Overall ok, but a bit disappointed. The first pair lasted for over 700km, but I'll be replacing these ones before that and trying something else.

Maximum comfort for wide feet
So comfortable! The toe box is wide as you’d expect from altra. Material is flexible and the cushioning, although plush, is not too squishy . Great grip, hold the foot well, although narrow feet might struggle to get a good fit. Used straight out the box with no issues on a walk through the fields. Love the orange colour! Ordered a half size larger than normal for extra comfort and to allow for possible swelling and yet no slip on the heel at all. Lovely!
