Fan quiet just sometimes.
After some research on noise reviews, a few years ago I purchased a somewhat smaller Pelonis table fan, and it indeed has provided very quiet operation. This 16" fan, though, goes into a loud rough sound mode after just a few minutes. Then, it sounds something like a WWII propeller plane heard low over water.Twice I opened the outer cage and made sure the plastic parts were tightly threaded on. Did not cure. Fan sits atop a bookcase on a bed of towels. Moving it during operation has no effect. I suspect miss-designed fan blades, but have no way to confirm.

Low Setting Is Too Powerful
I didn't get this fan at Amazon, but it is exactly the same fan. Because I bought it at a brick-and-mortar store, it was about $7.60 cheaper (don't fool yourself that shipping is free on Amazon; the cost of shipping is built into the prices). The last 16" oscillating fan I got was at least 20 years ago. It was a name brand (Sanyo) and it seemed better made than this fan is. These days, most of the fans have names you'd never recognize (Optimus, Windstream, Homebasix, Comfort Zone, Cool-Breeze). I suspect that they are all made by the same Chinese manufacturer (though I couldn't prove that), and they are probably all equally "efficient" in their design. In particular, the base on this fan is very cheap. You have to push the white part (which contains the switches) into a hollow plastic gray part (the dark base you see in the picture). That means that the bottom surface on this fan is hollow and not flat, which might present a problem depending on where you put it. The Sanyo fan I got 20 years ago had a smaller but one-piece base that was very solid. The base on this fan (meaning the gray part) is actually quite large, and it must be large for the sake of stability. Because it is hollow, it isn't heavy, so it has to be wide to keep the fan from tipping over.I am giving this fan three stars for a couple reasons. Mainly, the low setting is more powerful than I would like it to be (although some may see that as an advantage), and the resulting hum on Low is louder and deeper than what I am accustomed to from the Sanyo fan (the Sanyo was whisper quiet). This Pelonis fan is like having a fan which has the settings Medium, High and Very High. If what you want is just a gentle breeze on you to feel a little cooler, all you can get from this fan is a heavy breeze. The heavy breeze is great when I am hot, but it is too much when I am just a little warm. I tried to resolved the problem by positioning the fan two or three feet further away from me, but the air stream is still hard. I also tried to resolve the problem by pointing the fan towards the ceiling, and that was when I discovered that it won't point up. In fact, the vertical range of motion of the fan is very limited, much more so than the Sanyo fan.So it's for those three reasons -- the base is cheap, the fan doesn't have a true Low setting, and the vertical range of motion is limited -- that I have taken two stars off. Otherwise, it's a fine fan.Beyond that, there are no problems: It oscillates just fine (and quietly). When it isn't oscillating, it doesn't vibrate or squeak or anything like that. (When you assemble the fan, you'll have to tighten two nuts -- make sure you tighten them very well.) In fact, the fan seems very stable. I'm tempted to give it four stars because it really does work very well, I just think they could have designed it a little better.

Well made fan. Veru happy customer.
The fan pictured looks to be a color variation or something but its the same fan. The 16 inch Oscillating fan I got was all white with the Pelonis name on the front grill (check photos) the fan is made with glossy plastic that feels like its a step above the plastic that Lasko uses, the front and rear grills are all metal like they should be and the fans speeds are selected via four push buttons like they should be. No poorly located knobs or dials placed in an awkward, hard to reach spot (Lasko looking at you). This fan is both decently powerful and quiet. Also for once the low speed setting is actually a low speed setting! Its not just a slightly lower speed then full blast (Lasko again looking at you). My fan was purchased at a local brick and mortar store which is selling them for a slightly cheaper price then what it's going for on Amazon. Overall my opinion of this fan is pretty high. Its well made, very easy to assemble, quiet and moves enough air to do the job. I'd buy another one with out a second thought.
