I came to this book in a roundabout way while clearing out old magazines and came across an article on Sashiko by the author. That in turn led to buying a small sampler kit from her website. Needing further guidance on some points of technique I turned to a link on her website to a YouTube video that turned out to be based on this very book.If you want history this book has it. If you want to know how to get started, step by step, it's here. If you want projects they are here ranging from short and simple to more complicated. Page after page of patterns. Tools and materials they are here to.If you can sew a straight running stitch you can get started with sashiko and complete great projects. This book is a great guide on the way. Can't praise it to highly.

Ideal Sashiko book
Enjoyable and inspiring reading. Can't wait to get started. Ordered my preprinted Sashiko samplers from Susan Briscoe's own website. Decided to use perle cotton size 8 because it was a whole lot cheaper than branded Sashiko thread from Japan. A relaxing and addictive pastime.

Warning Sashiko is addictive!
This is a wonderful resource. In addition to the history and background, the projects themselves and the invaluable stitch library at the back, this book also lists suppliers and explains all the little details you need to know to successfully stitch sashiko. My only complaint is that it doesn't really cover boro (patching with old material or offcuts), or how to use it in its traditional way: as a mending method. It describes how it was used in this way but there are no detailed instructions or projects of this kind. But this is still an excellent book which will explain how to produce many different sashiko patterns from scratch by drawing grids (not relying on transfers or preprinted material).
