What a great starting point
This is a book I would not normally buy and read but each month I purchase a random book of which I do not know very much about and trying to broaden my horizons. Goodness there was a lot in here for a beginner like me to take on board, none the less totally Soil Science fascinating. I mean assessing your own soil, who does that? but I totally see where she is coming from. Reading about the importance of soil and the history to it, she does a great job of. So much information. Thoroughly enjoyed it at it was well written.

Excellent introduction to soil science
This easy-to-read book gives an excellent overview of soil science and how you can apply it to your own garden or farm. She goes over how to assess your own soil (without buying a kit!), soil composition from the chemical to the itty bitty crawlies and microscopic, variety of plants and their composition, ways to compost at home with instructions for your own setup. I've already recommended this book to my family who are avid gardeners. In addition, understanding soil science is something we all need in order to help turn around the impact of our lifestyle on the planet to implement the knowledge or encourage others to.

Wonderfully practical and useful
This book covers almost everything you need to know about soil. It also has some really useful information and practical tips including no till. I loved the tip on DIY soil test - I thought I had sandy soil but its loamy and I even tried the pH test with red cabbage! Great fun. The DIY methods even included bacterial testing and the more usual (and good) composting guide. It was also great to read about the history of soil and why its so important to look after it. Really enjoyed this book - incredibly useful and practical.

A great introduction to soil science
I love plants but don't have green fingers so I wanted a book to help me in this department. I got more than I bargained for in this book and though I haven't completed it as yet, I have read enough to know that it is a wonderfully instructive book. I feel it is a masterclass not only in soil but in ecology as a whole. If you have any interest in plants, soil or anything botanical, this is a great place to start.

very informative
I thoroughly enjoyed the author's previous book, "Think Like an Ecosystem," so naturally, I eagerly dove into her latest work. Even though I had already perused an advance copy, I found myself engrossed in the official publication. The book provides a refreshing perspective on growing plants, appealing to both gardening enthusiasts and hydroponics aficionados. While not an exhaustive guide to Soil Science, it equips readers with enough knowledge to follow agronomists and biologists when discussing soil dynamics. The sections on self-soil analysis and composting methods are particularly engaging. The author's advocacy for no-till farming, although lacking mention of suburban lawns, offers valuable insights. Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in improving their soil and embracing a holistic approach to gardening.

Avoid! Don't waste your money. The best thing about this book is the cover picture!
This is written as a school summer break project. Written to prove that the student managed to read and re write something else that was diluted.Just fluff! This book does not teach anything if you are looking for knowledge and solutions.

A great resource for anyone interested in organic gardening or farming
This is a well written book that starts off with a succinct summation of the history of soil science. It runs through the different types of soil and how they are created and then focuses on the importance of organic matter. This is the magic sauce which makes soils fertile for plant growth. The book also touches on the importance of the water cycle and a brief description of the other mineral cycles. Also the importance of the soil food web which is the billions of microscopic organisms that inhabit the soul and contribute to it's health. Humans have interrupted these cycles and food webs with over intensive farming practices ameliorated by the use of fossil fuel based fertilizers. Although these provide a short-term fix, in the long run they lead to soil depletion. There is an informative section on how to test your soil to measure it's health in all these regards. The author goes into good detail about low cost ways to do this where possible with household products that most will have on hand. The rest of the book details how this can be fixed by using techniques like crop rotation, no-till farming cover crops and other natural methods. A great read with much useful information.
