Just what mom needed
My mom had worn down the drive wheels on her Craftsman self-propelled mower to just sidewalls. Since she refused to use the riding mower I bought her, I got this set of drive wheels. They fit just right and had actual bearings instead of the original plastic bushings.Several people have commented on how the dust covers were warped. Mine also arrived warped, but seemed to straighten out as I laid them out for a week until I was able to install them. I couldn't have used the original dust covers if I wanted to as they were smaller and would have interfered with the fit of the new wheels. They didn't seem to rub on anything or create a big gap. The outside "hub caps" also snapped on snug and tight just like they did on the originals. With an oil change, new plug and air filter, along with a resharpened blade and these wheels, she really noticed the difference. Don't have to go shopping for a new mower now, she said. The wheel quality is very good. The dust cover warpage needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. I suspect they have no support in the middle when they come out of the mold and since they are so thin, they warp as they cool off. So I give the wheels a 5, and since my covers straightened out, I'll give them a 4. I guess that averages out to 4 1/2 stars, which rounds up to 5.This is an easy install and I recommend it for anyone that has a mower in generally good shape that wants to extend its usefulness instead of replacing it.

Good quality parts but not a repair for amaterurs!
The front drive wheels on my 25+ year old Craftsman 917.372281 self-propelled mower were long overdue for replacement. It turned out that the plastic gear teeth inside the wheels were totally worn away. along with the outside tire tread. This repair kit has high-quality rubber wheels instead of the hard plastic original ones. I wouldn't recommend installing this kit unless you have some mechanical experience and it is easier if you have a second person assisting. I recommend taking the old wheels off and see if any other parts need replacing before ordering. My right pinion gear was worn but useable for now and I should have replaced the drive belt while I had everything taken apart. There is a certain amount of disassembly required to get the new dust covers in place and these are the issues I ran into: 1) My mower did not have a nut on the right end of the axle, only a cotter pin. 2) The right pinion gear would not come off the axle shaft after the e-ring was removed and it didn't look like it was designed to slip off. So, we had to remove the axle and slide it out of the mower to get the right dust cover installed. Definitely a good time to replace the drive belt if you have to remove the axle. No such problem with the left pinion gear which slipped right off after the e-ring was removed. 3) When it came time to put the cotter pin back into the right end of the axle I had to muscle the wheel down onto the axle while my wife slipped in the cotter pin . That would have been nearly impossible without an assistant. I now have a self-propelled mower again. Good luck!

Best wheels, , note back plate is larger then the originals.
Absolutely Top Notch. Metal wheel bearing, quality of wheel composition is great. Kit come with a "O" ring and thin meatballs washer. I did not know but there is a felt washer behind the drive gear so best to order new one and lube them. I lucked out mine were still useable, however I'll get new ones since they were not in the best of shape . The back cover that comes with the wheel Is larger than the old one. So if you order a new wheel just the wheel chances are the oldbackplate will not fit. Order as a kit which this is. It's amazing out new tires work. My neighbor gave me this lawn mower so for about $80 worth of Parts it's like brand new. The new drive belt even have kevlar in it, in the new spark plug is iridium. Starts on the first pull. I just hope my neighbor doesn't want it back. Ha ha!

Perfect fit for my Craftsman 917.378070
My Craftsman lawnmower model number 917.378070 has been a great mower, but the front wheels had become slicks after several years of use. They had literally no tread left at all. With plenty of life left in the mower, I had wondered how difficult it would be to get new front wheels? As it turns out, thanks to Amazon, not hard at all.I changed them in under an hour. I could do it again in 15 minutes now that I know the tricky parts. The wheels seem to be of equal or better quality than the originals. They came packaged together and with a somewhat helpful instruction sheet. There are 2 kind of tricky parts:1. The gear knob is held on by a...actually I don't know what it's called - not a kotter pin, maybe they call it an "E clamp"? It locks the drive gear on by sliding into a slot in the axle post. Whatever - maybe there is a special tool made for taking those off and on, but if there is, I ain't got one. I ended up using the edge of a screwdriver to tap it off. One of them came off a little too enthusiastically and I had to go hunt for it on the garage floor. I was more careful with the 2nd one.2. Same piece; getting it back on. The first one goes on super easy. and you're thinking this is going to be a walk in the park, and you get the other wheel off, and put the dust cover on, the bushing washer, and the gear, and you try to put the clip on and the slot of the post isn't visible over the gear thingy. No room. The slot the clamp is supposed to slide into is buried and you can't get the clip on! Here's what you do - take the first wheel back off. (Or if you're reading this first, don't put the other wheel on until both drive gears are connected) Leave the pin on the drive gear, but push it's axle part towards the other side. It's a solid axle and you have to put some pressure on it for the pin to clear the other side.Hopefully that makes it easier for someone else someday, because it wasn't mentioned in the instructions. Maybe other mowers have a little more clearance for the clamp and it isn't an issue on those, but it gave me some trouble.
