Who would have thought this little sensor is what caused gear stick to get stuck in park!
This brake light switch can cause your car to not engage the gear stick. When the connection fails to close because the circuit is still open not only will your brakelights not go on but you will not be able to engage the gears. Reasonably easy to install with some contortions and a good helping of promising oneself to do more yoga henceforth.

Exact Fit
My only concern with this brake light switch was: there was no mention in the product information that this switch also controlled the cruise control. That seems to be an important part of the product description necessary to choose the proper type of this switch. If not for the customer questions at the end of the page I may have ordered the wrong part. (Which, unfortunately, I did, prior to ordering this part.)This switch exactly replaced the old one. To replace the switch, you are required to be a contortionist in order to see what you are doing under the dashboard. (You will need a good light source.) You will also need to be very dexterous with your fingers in order to hold the brake pedal down and to remove the bolt holding the switch to its bracket. Then you simply unplug the connection and connect the new switch. Then comes the fun part: getting the nut onto the switch while holding the brake pedal down and lining up the nut with the bolt. I used a medical clamp to hold the nut in the approximate place and with my other hand holding the switch to align with the nut. Once the alignment is approximate you can release the brake pedal to capture the nut. Then, while holding the switch in place I needed to spin the nut until it (FINALLY) catches the threads of the bolt. Then simply snug it down. One caveat: make sure the upper nut on the switch is in the same position on the new switch as was the old one to allow for proper operation. The new switch works perfectly!

Does not support 06 forester cruise control
Bought this to regain my cruise control, after replacing a store bought switch which did not. After installing I was surprised to see that this switch did exactly the same thing as the one I replaced.
