Some become so powerful that their demands supersede those of the kings and queens they serve – amazing!War with France is on and off throughout most of this novel and Charles conducts himself so favorably that he attracts the attention and favor of King William III and his Queen, Mary, becomes very fond of the companionship of Diana. That bond will be broken but justice will eventually be served as Lady Diana remains a woman of practical skills and impeccably moral character.Joys and tragedies fill the years of Charles and Diana’s marriage and these scenes are delightfully depicted in a vivacious style by this obviously skilled author, Margaret Porter. She quite clearly knows how to balance plot and character development and present 17th Century English royalty and service in a dynamic and enchanting manner.Fine, fine historical fiction that this reviewer highly recommends!

This was an enjoyable book to read. It has a good writing style and the historical research done allows the reader to learn more about the time period.

I was intensely involved in this beautifully written historical novel of the last Stuart monarchs, mostly told through the eyes of Charles, the bastard son of pretty Nell Gwyn and Charles II, and Charles' wife Diana de Vere, intelligent, devoted and cherished by many. The novel begins with their first meeting when they are hardly in their teens to well over a generation later. This is a period of history I knew little and I followed it with fascination, becoming SO involved with the characters, caring DEEPLY what happened to them. I felt as if I were there and was sorry when it was done. The afterword notes are fascinating, explaining what was known history and what the creative imagination of the author. It is hard to believe that the lives of the many people surrounding the court from Charles II through the sickly Queen Anne were not really just as spilled out in the pages of this engrossing novel!

Very interesting and seemingly historically accurate. I had not read a novel of that time period before and it was very informative.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were well-drawn. Diana and Charles were both completely of their time and accessible to the modern reader. Margaret Evans Porter's research was well done. This is a book that I will reread as there is so much to it, and it it so well written.
