Replaced a control hit by lightning. I found it difficult to program.

This unit may have a lot of capabilities, but its ease of use is poor.  I inherited one of these with a house I bought, where it was working fine.  But when the watering rules changed, reprogramming it has been nothing but trouble.  I downloaded the manual from the net but it has been little help.  The times are all in but I can't get it to automatically start anymore, I have to fire it manually to get it to sequence through all the zones.   What it needs is some kind of diagnostic feedback of what it actually thinks it's supposed to do that will help you determine what it's waiting for when it doesn't fire as expected.  The interface mechanisms are arcane and quirky.  I suppose it's solidly built and reliable, but if I can't get it to do what I want that's little consolation.  There's too much dependence on the special LCD display symbols when a generic display and smarter software would probably be better, more flexible and understandable.   A test mode where it would explicitly spell out what it thinks it's program is would be a big help.
