Why would you spend this much on cobalt when cobalt metal is worth 12.08 per pound

Its a cube of Titanium!
I ordered this because its just something cool to have. I own several bicycles with titanium frames, titanium handlebars, titanium stems, and titanium seat posts so when I saw this I ordered it ASAP. Its a cubic inch of titanium with the periodic symbol laser engraved on the front and its proudly displayed on my desk. Its pretty heavy and the edges are a little sharp, especially the corners, so I smoothed them out with an angle grinder. I did test it to make sure it is real titanium so I submerged it in salt water (with an extra helping of several tablespoons of salt) for 48 hours. If it was steel it would rust pretty quickly, and if it was stainless steel, it would still develop some small rust spots. It just laughed at the saltwater test. So far so good. Titanium also has a trademark color of sparks when it is being sanded or cut with an angle grinder / cutting wheel. Steel will have sparks that appear red/orange/yellow if using an angle grinder. Titanium's sparks will appear white. So when I smoothed out the edges and corners, you could see the trademark white sparks. It passed. So again, I do have it proudly displayed on my desk, and probably will transfer it to my storage shed where I have all my bikes wall mounted or hanging. So if you want a really cool paperweight, or a metallurgy conversation piece, or you just are a fan of all things titanium then this would be a really cool trinket. I give it 5 stars for being real titanium.

Best Paperweight Ever
This titanium cube (and others in the series) may be a great tool for teachers, but I find it equally-appealing as a simple lover of titanium items. I got this specifically to display on my desk and to double as a paperweight, and it looks great next to one of my titanium pens.As other reviewers have noted, the edges and corners may be a concern for some -- while I wouldn't go as far as to call them, "sharp," they're certainly prominent -- as a point of reference, I can hold the cube in my hand and squeeze it tightly with no injury and only minimal discomfort, so it is safe to handle. The only real problem likely to arise from its edges is injury to a bare foot or a hardwood floor if it's dropped accidentally.Beyond use on my desk, I also find that the hefty weight of the cube makes it fun to "fidget" with while I'm thinking at my computer -- either by spinning it by its corners between my thumb and index finger, or by tossing it an inch or two in the air with one hand.So... Whether you work relates to titanium, you collect titanium, or simply like to "fidget," this tiny cube has something for everybody.

Perfect for science teachers and makers
The Titanium cube is the first in the set for me, and I am hooked. I can’t wait to get the other elements. I’m a bit of a science nerd, and a maker who has had opportunities to make things out of Titanium, so I’m familiar with it’s machining properties. I appreciate the nice finish and laser engraving on the face. It is nice to develop an intuition about the relative weights of the various pure metals. This is something that will command a display shelf to itself. It does come in a protective plastic case, but it is not transparent, so I won’t be leaving it in the case. If you get one, it is a good idea to wear gloves to keep from getting your oils on the raw metal (you may spot the smudges on mine).
