4K and Atmos Masterpiece for Videophile/Audiophile
The 4K Dolby Vision Edition (finally!!) was worth the wait. Watched on a Sony 77A80K with a Panasonic 4K player. Colors were more natural with greater realism and texture compared to the 1080p Blu-ray. It’s especially evident at the start of the dinner scene. The wood of the Grand Staircase has more warmth and grain texture, the lighting on actors provides better skin tones and the clarity is much improved compared to the 1080p version. However, what really makes the 4K version worth it is the Atmos mix. It is hard to explain, but voices have more tone variation which adds more depth to dialogue. Dialogue is also more clear on the track and not overshadowed by action/soundtrack. Your center channel will get a workout. The Atmos track immerses you with more wrap-around sounds plus the added benefit of subtle sounds that have excellent placement. A good scene that showcases the audio is when Rose is on the lifeboat before jumping back onto Titanic. The scene is full of dialogue and soundtrack, along with the rocket firing, but the most immersive part is the Atmos speakers taking over the subtlety of the pulleys on the lifeboat davits as it’s being lowered and the rear speakers take over the sounds of the davits flexing. For those who love the movie, this is a must have and it was worth the wait. Now just waiting for True Lies and The Abyss on 4K!
