Parliament / Funkadelic caught live in 1977 w/George Clinton, Bootsy Collins & co. Incl Maggot Brain/Good to Your Earhole, Mothership Connection & more Review: Legendary Rehearsal Performances - Despite the misleading name, this is actually a rerelease of a Japanese P-Vine album by the name of “Mothership Connection Newberg Session.” It contains 6 tracks from the legendary, much-bootlegged Newberg Sessions, which were recorded live in 1976 in an empty airplane hanger in New Jersey as a rehearsal for their P-Funk Earth Tour. It also contains a Michael Hampton performance of Maggot Brain from 1993. The Newberg tracks are excellent performances of their classic material When the mothership was flying high, recorded with not quite enough vocal mics through a cardboard box in an empty airplane hanger, and that’s how they sound. Gorgeous performances, the funk comes through strong, weak sound quality. I particularly enjoyed the performances of Mothership Connection, Standing on The Verge, and the extended groove on Gettin’ To Know You. The Maggot Brain performance feels a little like something they felt they had to throw in (probably because the Maggot Brain performance recorded in Newberg had already been released on Hardcore Jollies). It’s a great performance though, one of my favorite kidd funkadelic renditions of the piece. If this is your first live P-Funk purchase, maybe start with Parliament’s Live: P Funk Earth Tour album (recorded and released in 1977), or the P-Funk All Stars Live at the Beverly Theater (from 1983) first. Edit: A few years later, I have to say my initial judgment of the sound quality on these sessions was pretty harsh. Yes, they are a little cardboardy, yes they were recorded in a large empty metal hall with only a couple vocal mikes. But, they are clean recordings of what was coming out of the soundboard, and once your ear adjusts to the room, it hits pretty hard and the mix is pretty good. All in all, these are legendary tapes for any live P-Funk fan to have. Review: Totally satisfied with product and service. - CD sounds excellent and packaging was intact. Great product at a great price!

Really good P-Funk Live Show
High quality live recording. Features Bootsy, Michael Hampton, Glenn Goins, Jerome Brailey, and much of the rest of the P-Funk gang. The band was starting to enter it's slick, more polished commercially successful phase, around the time of the release of Parliament "Mothership Connection" LP, and Funkadelic's "Hardcore Jollies" LP. If you're looking for the early Funkadelic line-up start with Live at Meadowbrook, or one of the Sugar Shack shows (unfortunately, the only authorized released is on the uneven "Live 1972-1993" compilation). If you're looking for post-"One Nation" P-Funk shows, with the full guitar army, Maceo, et al, the Live at the Beverly Theatre in Hollywood set is great set to start with.

A funktastic album from the early years of Parliament / Funkadelic. An excellent album Sound quality is good, especially looking at the date recorded. The label is new to me, but I have to admit that I am happily surprised with the albums I got so far from them. (Bootsy Collins Live Baltimore 1978 and this album) The concert has that 70's funky fresh vibe over it, similar to "George Clinton: The Mothership Connection [DVD]" and "Parliament – The Newburgh Session [CD]" (Both HIGHLY RECOMMANDABLE) Second song on the album "Dr. Funkenstein" contains an AWESOME solo on the ARP from Mister Bernie Worrell Last song on the album "Maggot Brain/Good to Your Earhole" is a solid long version from Mr Michael Hampton. I can recommend this album for all y'all Funkateers out there, as this concert recording is the BOMB!!! Keepin the funk alive !!!

This marvellous cd is basically the same setlist as the pricey Newburgh sessions. I've played both cd's simultaneously and I honestly think this one just edges it in terms of energy. The musicianship is absolutely top notch. I think the momentum slows after the first four tracks but that's not to say the rest aren't great. It's worth the price alone for the live version of standing on the verge of getting it on.
