I also noticed that this filter does not have the wire mesh as pictured on the packaging. I also noticed that my last filter had the foam pad on the bottom. I did some research and ffrom what I found, I am not concerned with either element missing. Here is what I found: 1. Foam Pre-Filter (Foam Pad) This component, also known as a pre‑filter, serves as an extra layer that captures larger debris—like leaves, sand, or pine needles—before they reach the pleated filter media. It helps extend the life of the main filter, especially in dusty or severe driving conditions. But if you live in relatively clean urban areas, the added layer isn’t critical. Pre-filters are extras for harsh environments, not essentials. 2. Wire Mesh Backing Some filters include a metal mesh for added structural support or to deter rodents and pests from chewing into the intake—a concern for vehicles stored outdoors for long periods. However, many modern filters—including this FRAM model—are built rigid enough that wire mesh isn't required. So, unless you’re concerned about rodents or need that extra rigidity for a specific setup, its absence isn't a deal-breaker.
