ACTING MASTERCLASS FROM LEAD CAST
Around 50 years on the film is looked upon as a classic these daysAnd received several nominations in terms of Oscars in 1970 bothlead actors were indeed in the mix for best actor, must admit bothwere indeed outstanding especially in my view Dustin Hoffman. The film tells of how Joe Buck (John Voight) feeling he was stuckin a rut decides to leave his Texas life-style to try his luck as a maleprostitute in New York but not all goes to plan, he quickly runs outof funds often foolishly trying to look flushHe'll run into conman and pick-pocket/ petty-thief 'Ratso' Rizza(Dustin Hoffman) though things initially don't work out betweenthem, when Joe hits rock-bottom 'Ratso' will try in his way tohelp.'Ratso' is a sick man not only having a limp but living in a damproom in a disused building where he has invited Joe to share, its Winter, 'Ratso' develops a serious cough and despite Joehaving found a way to make a few bucks refuses to see a Doctor. His condition will eventually get so bad, Joe will suggest winotthmoney he steals to go to warmer climbs Miami. Will it work out ?A sometimes seedy affair, not 5 star for me, but, worth a viewingeven just for the outstanding acting from Hoffman and Voight.

WARNING. This film was being cut 5 minutes from the original film
I saw this movie so long time ago and by that time it was a VHS tape and the image was so bad. Now that I have the dvd received from amazon, I was so happy that it is stereo and the video image was acceptably good enough. It was not lik HD remastered but the image of the night shots and especiallt most of the day times, it was clear enough to see the sky. I was all happy about it.The story was quite original and just like it is hard to believe that this movie was made back in 1969. First the NY looks just the same as now. Jon Voight, the cowboy wearings came from Texas comes to NY to earn money by being a hustler. But it was not easy at all. The woman he meet who seems to be a rich gal invited to her nice looking house but instead of paying him for his courteous offer, she asekd him the money and she cried by saying am I not beautiful enough for asking you moeny for having sex with you? Dah,... Then again, he meets this guy Dustin Hoffman who seems like he knows this NY pretty well and he asks for money to introduce woman to hook him up turn out to be a liar.Later on, he finds him out and Dustin says sorry and takes him to his place which is an empty place which is a redevelopment area that is about to be crashed. They live together from then on. Dustin becomes sick and Jon Voight takes care of him. Anyway they make a perfect combie anyway. They hustle around the street. The market to steal groceries and stuff. The song Everybody's Talkin' by Harry Nilsson was in this movie and I heard that it became a huge hit at the billboard chart at that time. It was just cheerful to hear whenever two guys are walking on the street with this song is playing. I felt like I am back at my old place. This is one of the Four best movie of John Schlesinger. Others are <MARATHON MAN><THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN><THE DAY OF THE LOCUST>He made a lot of memorable movies in his country and in hollywood and I disagree that some people are saying after he came to hollywood he did nothing but making stupid movies.From[...]

MIDNIGHT COWBOY DVD
Another film that I find hard to rate and review. We saw this in 1970 in the cinema, and it was a mind blowing experience. I don't remember seeing it since, but I may well have done. I just don't remember!!! Last night my wife and I sat down (with a glass of wine) and found ourselves watching a film neither of us could quite get into. Voight and Hoffman act their socks off as do the support cast (quite a marvellous selection - Sylvia Miles, Brenda Vaccaro (why she was nominated for best supporting actress is beyond me), with Bob Balaban and Barnard Hughes and particularly John McGiver all exel). The party scene, very artfully filmed, features many NY "faces" of the time...Taylor Mead, Paul Morrisey, Viva, Ultra Violet, Pat Ast, but again failed to connect with us. This may partly because of the way JS edited the film, and we found not one single likeable character. Balaban and Hughes evoked sympathy for their sad loser characters, but that's all. Sclesinger made the film exactly as he wanted and good on him. It is a classic, but to me it is a classic "of it's time" and did not wear well. I truly did ponder my star rating, and I know I go against the majority of opinions. See it by all means and judge for yourself. The DVD I have is OK quality wise, but nothing extraordinary, and no extras. Good subtitles.
