The War of the Worlds (1953) 4K UHD + When Worlds Collide BD [2022]
This review is for the War of the Worlds (4k) + When Worlds Collide (blu-ray) realised in 2022.Only the War of the Worlds disc is UHD, When Worlds Collide is standard HD blu-ray. I think this was a wise move by Paramount as I think War of the Worlds is the far more popular film and the reason why people are likely to purchase this. If they had made When Worlds Collide UHD and priced the set at £35-£40 I think people would think twice about making the purchase. The way I look at it is I paid a fair price for War of the Worlds in UHD and When World Collide is a nice extra. The picture on War of the Worlds is excellent. There are some soft spots in the film but I suspect this is due to the original film rather than the restoration. There has been some controversy about the colour of mars at the beginning of the film with some saying it is too blue. This may be true but for the few shots that it appears in I really cannot see it as a reason to ignore this release. The rest of the colour is great. There has been some digital enhancement, removing the, many, wires holding up the Martian ships, and I think the film looks the best I can remember seeing it.The disc has a DTS-HD 5.1. soundtrack which I found clear and better than I expected, given the age of the film. Purists may not be happy that the disc does not contain the original English mono soundtrack but, personally, I don’t think I would ever use it if it did.The extras on the disc seem to be carried over from previous releases but as I don’t own any I cannot be sure.As noted above, When Worlds Collide is a standard HD blu-ray. For the age of the film I found the picture nice and watchable and the sound nice and clear. I’ve seen worse blu-rays for newer films so really have no complaints about this disc. There are no extras on this disc.

Nice but not a great 4K transfer
I am not going to review the films. Only buy them if you know what you are buying. Classic low-budget films that are highly entertaining and show the beginnings of Hollywood, rewriting scripts to give them an American spin. The 4K transfer is OK, but not great.

Movie classics
Best picture quality that I've ever seen these old movies in, however note that "When worlds collide" is a normal Blu-ray and not a 4k.

Mindblowing
One of my favourite all time films. I had this on DVD, but decided to go for the blu ray as I had a few quid left over from payday. I don’t know how they did it, but the blu ray picture is amazing. Nice and sharp, and the colours really pop. Looks like a modern film in terms of picture quality. Also, the sound blew me away, it's epic. Speech is more clear, and the 5.1 surround is massive and crystal clear. You can hear much more background effects that I didn’t even notice on the DVD version. They done such a good job on remastering this, it's incredible. It's like watching it for the first time all over again! And the film was made just after WW2!!!??In terms of the story, we all know it by now. but it's the closest to the book than the other films (I don’t know why the Tom Cruise version is even called War of the Worlds, it's nothing like the book) It's like it's told from a different perspective and in a different time period; from a military and scientist's point of view rather than a 'narrator' or journalist, and 1950's (I assume) America rather than Victorian England. There are some really cool extras too.Fast delivery, a little bit on the expensive side for a blu ray but I guess it's an import (works fine on my UK player) and it's pretty rare, but still worth every penny. Money well spent, no Buyer's Remorse from me!Bloody brilliant seller too. 6 stars!
