The Labours of Hercules: An Astrological Interpretation

An Unknown Treasure
Alice Bailey was a prolific writer on esoteric knowledge, and some of her books can be difficult to interpret. The Labors of Hercules is a bit more focused and easier to understand, as it is based off of notes from public lectures regarding the same topic. This book is a treasure for anyone who wants to understand the spiritual symbolism regarding the Labors of Hercules, and how each labor relates to a specific sign of the zodiac.

Great book for those working on progressing as a Soul
If you are at all interested in metaphysics/theosophy this is a great guide describing the process of evolving towards greater enlightenment as a soul. It describes each of the 12 labours of Hercules as a metaphor as he performs twelve tasks, each corresponding to a different sign of the zodiac, and progresses in personal enlightenment, growth and wisdom as a Soul. Each task is described and then interpreted by his mentor. Written by a well known theosophist and spiritual teacher. I've had to replace it a few times after losing it during one move, and one fire. I've always felt I've wanted it around as a reference book that is always handy as a reminder when I need to refocus on my own journey through life.

a myth for each month
This book provides a mythical story about each of the 12 Labors of Hercules. Each labor corresponds to one of the astrological signs. There is a discussion about the symbolism of the myth after each one. Hercules represents each of us - a soul incarnate in matter, and the labors represent the difficulties and tests we encounter in the material world. It's fascinating to read the labor for the current month each month as we go through the astrological year.Alice Bailey's books are somewhat difficult to read, but well worth it for the spiritual seeker. Her work has resonated with me as truth more deeply than anything I've ever read. It is highly mental material, and I can only read a few pages at a time. Any more than that gives me a headache.

Buried treasure, but not easy reading
I have long been a fan of the work of Alice A. Bailey,,and this book on the Labours of Hercules from an astrological perspective does not disappoint. In combination with a study of the written Greek and Roman myths that survive from early times, Bailey's work provides soul food for a deeply esoteric contemplation of astrology, as the wisdom science should correctly be studied. But that's just it. Bailey provides no easy snacking, you have to work at it with devotion, which is why I deleted one star for the benefit of the modern reader. Her work is no less classic. To be fair, she was raised in the late Victorian - Edwardian era into a life of privilege which allowed her the means to study the most arcane and fascinating subjects in the dawning New Age. She was a prominent Theosophist, proponent of Helena Blavatsky, and channeled the wisdom of "The Tibetan" woven throughout many of her published works. The continuing work of the Lucis Trust keeps her work in print.

A profound yet simple look at the signs of the zodiac.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in a deeper look at astrology. The use Greek mythology.to convey the message is brilliant.

Disappointed!
I was very disappointed to find that this book is not what I had hoped.I had hoped for an 'Astrological' interpretation in the sense that perhaps such an interpretation had been in the mind of the author(s) of the Hercules/Heracles stories. I wanted 'Ancient Astrology'!Instead what is here seems to me to be simply what is in the mind of the modern 'Astrological' authors of this book. So there is little connection here with the original. If I had wanted this kind of modern 'Astrological' mystic clap trap I would have gone and bought a newspaper, and it would have cost much less!A book that I will never finish. It might be useful if you want an introduction to Modern Astrology?
