All About Scots
The book arrived in the condition described. It arrived sooner than expected. I have just started reading the book. Even though the author claims not to be a authority, the amount of information he provides is quite educating. The specific terms, history and other information are relevant to me in developing a basic understanding of kilts. While the book is small, it is packed with tidbits of info for the novice. Highly recommended!

A Kilter's Reference Guide
This little book is a gem of information for those just getting into the wear and display of kilts and their ensembles, or even for those who have been wearing them for a while and want to know a bit of their history and correct wear. This is not a "bible" for us kilt-wearing folk, but a good bit of reference about what goes into the wardrobe and the classic times for each item and how they are to be displayed. For the contemporary kilt clan, this book will be an interesting bit of historical trivia, as almost none of the "rules" will apply to you. Contemporary kilts generally don't come in tartan designs and have pockets all over the place, something not found on a classic Scottish or Irish kilt. But, if you are going to be historically correct, this book is an excellent guide to keep you on the right track and keep those of the classic tradition from chewing you out for wearing the attire incorrectly. I enjoyed the history of the kilt, but have adjusted it to modern fashion, both with the contemporary and tartan kilts. Unlike other tomes, this book imparts the basic information and then gets out of your way.

A Bold Fashion Statement
I'm the last guy I ever expected to buy, read or review anything having to do with clothes or fashion but here I am doing it. I'm getting married in a few months and I can't remember everything Grandpa said about the proper wearing of a kilt. It's too late to ask him so I turned to the book. It was a good choice.I suspect that this will appeal to a rather limited market, namely those people who are interested in the "proper" way to wear highland dress. It gives short and well explained chapters on just about every aspect of traditional dress and has a little more besides. The author is straightforward in describing things and does so in a matter that is quite enjoyable. He is careful to distinguish between his personal preferences and those of "purists". Illustrations help to explain nuances and differences and also help to explain more difficult things like tying certain knows and making some accoutraments. Some of them could stand be be a little larger but they get the job done.It serves its purpose and does so well and with a bit of humor.

Good basic information but a bit dated
I bought and read this shortly after buying my first kilt. It was clear, interesting, useful and kept me from making a complete fool of myself (most of the time) in traditional settings. I haven't referred to it since; all of the information can be found on line, though this would help you sift out the worse advice, and custom is a bit looser in most settings in this area in the US, in my limited experience.Still, I think anyone who enjoys the fruit of such a revered and ritualized attire owes it to themselves and to the tradition to learn that tradition and how it evolved. There are those who do take this very seriously and are apt to take extreme offense to it being abused.I also recommend the site "X marks the Scot" to anyone who has or is considering a kilt.

Would I recommend this book
I ordered this book because of a new interest in Kilts, and my plans on buying my first one. I thought this book would be helpful. The book is dry, and focuses more on the history of kilts and tartans, and gives you a very strict guide (almost military precision)of how things should be worn. I am not really concerned that my kilt pin might be an inch or so off from where it should precisely be. Also, the author does not explain the terms he uses to someone who is new to this attire, which I thought was the whole purpose of the book. I had to stop and look up many words and terms he uses, to understand what he was talking about. Not very many illustrations either, and the ones that are there are drawn, not actual. Would I recommend this book? Probably not, unless you were doing research on the history of kilts. I found better information (and my questions answered) on Youtube videos, on how to wear a kilt.

Honestly, the original is much better.
I have the 3rd edition of this book, published in 1989, and it is much better. It contains much more information and contains many useful illustrations. This new addition has no illustrations. I bought this new version hoping for new information on 21st century highland fashion and modern utility kilts and casual kilts made with artificial materials. I would recommend finding an older copy of an earlier version and visiting the X Marks the Scot forums for more current information l

Not as good as the original.
I had bought the book by the original author years ago but can't find it. So I bought this version because the author has passed away and this version is updated to 2017. The revised edition is definitely up to date but I'm disappointed that there no pictures like in the original and that the book is much smaller than the original. This one will fit in a sporran. Still has good information about wearing the kilt and all the accessories.

Interesting opinions of an American kilt wearer
An informative book on the American ideas of the "rules" of wearing a kilt. However, if you are in doubt of what you should or should not wear, consult the owners/managers of one of the many shops specializing in Gaelic wear. They will give excellent advice on what is acceptable in Britain.

Proper information
Did I get some information? Yes. Was it worth it? Not to me.Very proper, ie what shirt to wear with what jacket, what tie to wear with what shirt, etc etc.Think of it like the rules around wearing a sports coat vs a suit vs a tux in the day or evening.I am new to kilt wearing but only on a casual basis (walking the dog etc) and wanted some general information so I did not look like a knob. ie: should I wear hiking boots or sneakers? Tshirt or golf shirt?Basically comparing it to normal clothing I wanted to know what to wear while at the beach and they were talking about what to wear at a wedding. Now, they did tell me some etiquette things I am happy about but it was not really that helpful

bad bad bad...
I've red few reviews on this book before purchasing it and they were quite different, I still gambled and purchased it. What I've got was less information You could find in Wikipedia and the illustriasions are just awful! Not informative at all! I suggest You search for a better book on the subject, because this one is a waste of time.
