Excellent introduction to Owen Barfield
I was introduced to the work of Owen Barfield through the writings of Gary Lachman, and Gary’s work led me to this collection of essays by Barfield. This is my first reading of Barfield in his own words, and it was a superb introduction to this man’s incredible body of work. The essays span Barfield’s long life and wide range of thought, and provide both the novice and experienced Barfield reader with a broad exposure to Barfield’s contribution to the world of ideas.A particular highlight of this collection is the expert commentary and compilation by editor Rory O’Connor. Rory’s introductory essay is deeply insightful into Barfield’s evolution of thought, and his end notes play a vital role in clarifying and supplementing the essays.Owen Barfield was a unique, compassionate, and insightful thinker. His contribution to the world of ideas in the 20th century is not adequately appreciated. This collection, with O’Connor’s sincere editing and commentary, is an excellent step in rectifying this situation and bringing Barfield to the wider world, into a 21st century that needs these ideas more than ever.
