Nice illustrations but very oddly arranged on the plates
Somewhat querky but probably the most useable true fieldguide for Mexico. Nice illustrations but very oddly arranged on the plates. Very brief text not much use. Could do with range maps. Easily carried.

Holiday bird-watching
I'm sure this book will prove invaluable on my forthcoming trip to Mexico, Guatemala and Belize and afte the holiday I'll be able to comment more knowledgably on its contents.

A useful pocket-sized guide to the birds of Mexico and the northern parts of Central America. Because of the high number of species, the descriptions are rather brief and the plates rather squashed. Nevertheless, the plates are of a reasonable standard and would enable most species to be identified from them. The Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America by Sophie Webb has better plates but is too large to be called a field guide and the Helm guide to the Birds of Belize is limited in range and is again too large to be called a field guide. The Collins/Princeton illustrated checklist to the Birds of Mexico and Central America whilst pocket-sized, does not do Ber Van Perlo's plates justice by being far too cramped. I would therefore recommend this book for anyone travelling to Mexico and Central America down as far south as Honduras after which, the Birds of Costa Rica by Garrigues and Dean would be your best bet.

No distribution maps for the birds
The book is not as easy to use as I had hoped.Illustrations are not on the same page as the descriptions. But it appears to be a comprehensive guide.

The best bird book on birds in Mexico I have come ...
The best bird book on birds in Mexico I have come across (I have Peterson and Chalif; and Howell and Webb) however it falls well short of modern standards and the more useful field guides that have the bird pictures, description and distribution maps on the same page. Flicking from the descriptions and distribution information to the pictures is an out dated bore. Add a number of birds are not shown (no picture) and this is a book that while useful is sub-standard.

Great holiday birding.
My husband took this on holiday to Mexico and loved identifying all the unusual birds.
