With the Light... Vol. 3: Raising an Autistic Child

This is book three in the series of manga novels about a young family and their experiences with their autistic son. The story of Hikaru Azuma continues, with his progression through Elemantary Years. If you know someone with autism, or just want to know more about what this means, then I can think of no better story than this one. By turns, funny, sad and uplifting, it geniunely brings a humanity to what autism means to the individual and everyone that person touches. This is the kind of book they should be teaching in schools, so that everyone can gain an insight into the world of autism and autistic people. I can't recommend this enough.

I bought this for my autistic child after he read the other books in the series and he loved them so much, because its in the life of a autistic child, so it showed him how someone else lives with autisum.

As a librarian, I recommended this series to many who had autistic family members, worked with autistic individuals, or were just interested. All found the series rang true to their own experiences despite the setting in another country. The series follows a young Japanese family from the expectation of their first child, the discovery of his autism, and their daily trials through to Junior High age (the author passed away while working on the 8th vol.). If your local library doesn’t own it, you can get it from another through inter-library loan (and maybe recommend it for purchase for your library).

These books give an unusual insight to the life of parenting a child on the "spectrum". A great read for parents, teachers and teenagers.

Great book and prompt delivery.

The "With the Light" manga series is excellent. It presents autism is a completely new format. Even though the series is set in Japan, the experiences that parents of autistic children go through are universal. Some parts of this book made me cry.
